According to eyewitnesses and CCTV footage, two motorcycle-borne assailants wearing turbans went up to Singh at the gate of the shrine on March 28 and the pillion rider fired at him using an AK-47.

The persons who have been booked are Sarabjeet Singh of Tarn Taran district, Punjab; Amarjit Singh Bitta of Bilaspur in Uttar Pradesh; Harbans Singh Chugh, former bureaucrat and head of Nanakmatta gurudwara management committee; Pritam Singh Sandhu, president of local social organisation Tarai Mahasabha; and Baba Anup Singh, chief jathedar of Gurudwara Sri Har Govind Sahib, Ratanpura.

Police sources claimed that Sarabjeet has purportedly taken responsibility for the murder on social media. “A person identifying himself as Sarabjeet has declared on Facebook that he killed the spiritual leader. We are trying to ascertain whether it is the account of the person whom the police have booked,” said a police officer on the condition of anonymity.

“The two killers had fled to Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh after committing the crime. From there, they were seen in CCTVs going towards Shahjahanpur. We are trying to track them with the help of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi police,” said the officer.
