Q What are the causes of tooth sensitivity and how does one manage it?

There are many causes for teeth sensitivity, such as the erosion of the outer layer of teeth exposing the dentin, cavities and tooth decay, cracks or chips in the teeth, procedures like teeth whitening, brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush, gum diseases like gingivitis or periodontitis, consuming acidic substances like citrus fruits, soda and vinegar, and long-term use of some mouthwashes containing alcohol. Here are a few steps to reduce sensitivity: use a soft-bristled toothbrush, try desensitising toothpaste, avoid acidic foods and drinks, use a fluoride rinse, watch your brushing technique, and visit your dentist.

Q Can the removal of wisdom teeth affect my vision?

It is a myth that removing wisdom teeth can cause loss of eyesight. Wisdom teeth removal is designed to target the teeth and the surrounding oral structures, with minimal risk to other systems such as vision. Wisdom teeth are located at the back of your mouth, far from the eyes and the optic nerves. The anatomical distance between these teeth and the visual pathways means that any procedures involving wisdom teeth do not impact vision. Wisdom teeth are absolutely safe to remove without hampering your eyesight.

Q What does one do if the milk teeth are not falling off and adult teeth have already erupted?

This situation is very common in children. Firstly, do not panic. Schedule an appointment with a dentist to evaluate the situation. They can determine if the milk tooth needs to be extracted or if there’s any other issue that is causing the delay in the natural loss of the tooth. The dentist will check if the adult tooth is properly aligned and if there’s any risk of crowding or damage to adjacent teeth. They may also assess if the milk tooth is interfering with the eruption of the adult tooth. If the milk tooth is severely delaying the adult tooth’s proper placement or causing discomfort, the dentist might recommend extracting the milk tooth. Avoid trying to remove the tooth yourself.

Q Are fixed artificial teeth better than removable dentures in edentulous patients?

The choice between fixed artificial teeth (such as dental implants) and removable dentures depends on various factors including dental health, lifestyle and personal preferences.

Fixed artificial teeth or dental implants have certain advantages. They are stability and function, durability, bone health, aesthetics, 95 per cent bite strength, natural feel and no hampering of taste. The disadvantages are higher cost, longer duration and invasive procedures.

With removable dentures, the advantages are mainly lower cost and non-invasive procedure. But the disadvantages are poor stability, discomfort, higher maintenance, 22 per cent bite strength, unnatural feel and effect on taste perception. So, choosing the right option depends on individual’s dental health, budget, lifestyle and personal preferences.

Q Why do some people have yellow teeth and some white teeth? Is it normal?

Yes, it’s normal for people to have different tooth colours. Several factors can influence tooth colour, resulting in variations from person to person. Some of them are as follows.

Genetics: Just like eye and hair colour, the natural colour of your teeth is partly determined by genetics. Some people naturally have whiter teeth, while others may have a more yellowish tint.

Diet: Foods and drinks like coffee, tea, red wine and certain fruits like berries can stain your teeth.

Oral hygiene: Good oral hygiene contributes to maintaining the natural whiteness of your teeth.

Ageing: As people age, the enamel on their teeth can wear down, making the underlying dentin more visible.

Smoking and tobacco consumption: Tobacco products can cause significant staining and discolouration of teeth.

Medications and trauma: Some medications can cause staining. Teeth that have been injured may change colour due to internal damage.

QCan we have braces at any age to correct the misaligned teeth?

Yes, you can get braces at almost any age! Orthodontic treatment is not limited to children or teenagers. Many adults seek braces or other orthodontic solutions to correct misaligned teeth, improve bite issues, and enhance their smile. Here are some points to consider.

Types of braces: Adults have options beyond traditional metal braces. Ceramic braces (which are less noticeable), lingual braces (placed on the back of the teeth), and clear aligners like invisalign offer more discreet alternatives.

Orthodontic health: It’s important to have healthy teeth and gums before starting treatment.

Treatment duration: Treatment times can vary based on the complexity of the case. Adults might need a bit longer than children due to factors like bone density and the extent of misalignment.

Costs: Braces for adults can be more expensive than for younger patients.

Maintenance: Adults may need to be more diligent with oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment, as braces can make cleaning teeth more challenging.
