The Neurological Aspects of Covid: Immediate Attention is the Key to Recovery

The data speaks for itself – saying that the sooner these neurological conditions are treated, the better the chances of a patient making a full recovery.

The Covid 19 pandemic will forever be remembered as a dark chapter in the history of the world. With millions dead and so many of the survivors suffering from physical and neurological conditions as a result of the virus, this phase has been especially difficult for medical personnel, who bravely fought on against the virus.

One such doctor is Dr Koushik Dutta, Consultant Neurologist at AMRI Hospitals, Dhakuria. Dr Dutta, in his chat with The Telegraph, shed some much-needed light on Covid-related neurosis, that was observed both during and after the pandemic. While some neurological disorders may have been caused by Covid itself, the condition of patients was worsened in part by the limitations that the pandemic imposed on them as a whole. The inability to seek help or treatment or the dangers associated with going in to a hospital or a clinic to consult with a doctor were among the leading causes for the far-reaching effects of Covid-related on neurological/psychological wellbeing, which often went unmapped.

While the data is still incomplete, especially from the 3rd and 4th waves of the pandemic, based on the findings from the first two particularly more virulent waves, it has been seen that many survivors have developed long standing neurological conditions. These include certain deadly conditions developing in the peripheral nerves and epilepsy-causing structural changes in the brain. There was also a high incidence of covid-induced strokes in this period.

The data speaks for itself – saying that the sooner these neurological conditions are treated, the better the chances of a patient making a full recovery. Delay, if any, only worsens the conditions in the long run. In fact, Dr Dutta points out that any emerging neurological issues, such as forgetfulness, insomnia or black outs should not be taken lightly and instead reported to a doctor immediately.

As expected, depression and anxiety have also increased exponentially in this same. People have been confined to small closed places, many have lost jobs, homes or livelihoods, yet others have lost near and dear ones or have contracted the dangerous virus themselves – all these situations contribute to this rise in depression. However, here the doctor says that the first line of defence is to support and stand with one another, followed by seeking professional help from a licensed practitioner in acute cases. Whether the difficulties you face are neurological or psychological, post-Covid or not, AMRI Dhakuria and its teams of expert doctors, nurses and medical personnel are always there to support you.
