Parliament witnessed high drama on Thursday after a physical altercation broke out between members of the BJP and Congress over home minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. BR Ambedkar.
The situation escalated outside Parliament when both the coalitions were protesting over Ambedkar insult. BJP MPs alleged that Rahul Gandhi pushed one of their members, causing injuries. Congress alleged stick-wielding BJP MPs hit them.
According to the PTI, police may record the statements of the two injured BJP MPs on Friday and may also call Rahul Gandhi for questioning.
When asked about the allegations by the BJP, Rahul Gandhi said, “I was trying to enter Parliament when BJP MPs stopped and threatened me. They pushed me, and I saw Sarangi being attended to by BJP members.” Priyanka Gandhi called it a “conspiracy to save Amit Shah.”
Shah, on Tuesday, had said: “Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai - Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar... If they had taken God’s name as often, they would have secured a place in heaven for seven lifetimes.”
The incident led to an outpour of reactions on the internet, with social media users taking potshots at the BJP for its theatrics.
Accusations of drama by BJP MPs
One user mocked BJP MPs, sharing an image showing a man riding a bicycle, pretending to fall after placing a stick on his own wheel, and blaming Rahul Gandhi. The caption read, “BJP MPs and their drama today.”
Comparing events to TV dramas
A post referred to Rahul Gandhi as #GoondaRahulGandhi, attaching a dramatic scene from a Hindi TV serial, where a supposed mother-in-law pushed her daughter-in-law, who swirls and falls but not before wrapping a curtain around her neck. It suggested that the BJP’s portrayal of events was theatrical, likening it to exaggerated soap opera antics.
Black belt Rahul Gandhi
One user posted a video of Thursday where one BJP MP yelled at Rahul Gandhi, “Sharm nahi aati, goondagardi karte ho (don’t you have shame, you are being a hooligan).” The user wrote, “Rahul Gandhi is a black belt in Taekwondo. If he just swings his left hand, half a dozen BJP MPs will fall down with a thud.”
Missing martial arts skills
A user teased, “Why didn’t martial arts expert Rahul Gandhi show his skills in Parliament to defend it? He’s a black belt in Aikido, right? Or is it like other pictures in his Raja Babu collection?” Raja Babu, starring Govinda, released in 1994, was about a girl leaving a man who wasn’t as sophisticated as he portrayed himself.
Hospital discharge drama
A user shared a video titled, “Hospital se discharge hone ke baad BJP Sansad.” The clip shows a man with a plaster on his right leg, but walking by that leg, only to be reminded by friends he was supposed to walk on his left leg.
The Aikido expert
Another post put up pictures of Rahul Gandhi in a dojo and wrote, “Rahul Gandhi is a black belt in Aikido. If he had actually touched one of the MPs wearing only shorts, there wouldn’t have been any need for a hospital. Sanghis are saying that they pushed us.”
The push and democracy meme
A meme titled, “Rahul’s push and democracy’s fall,” showed a cartoon of Rahul Gandhi standing on a desk in the House, with an ICU ambulance in the background. “BJP MPs admitted to ICU after being pushed by Rahul Gandhi,” was written on the ambulance body.
