Donald Trump's Republican Party has wrested control of the 435-member US House of Representatives from the ruling Democratic Party with a razor-thin majority, setting the stage for a showdown with Joe Biden in the next two years of his presidency.

The Republicans now have 218 seats as against 211 of the Democratic Party. The counting of six seats is still going, the outcome of which would determine the final size of the House.

The Republicans - who had hoped to win back control of both chambers - underperformed expectations in the November 8 midterm elections.

A Varanasi court on Thursday rejected Gyanvapi Masjid committee's objection to a petition seeking right to worship 'Shivling' claimed to have been found in the mosque complex and fixed December 2 as the next date of hearing in the case.

Fast track court Judge Mahendra Kumar Pandey found the petition filed by Kiran Singh worth hearing and fixed December 2 for taking up the matter, Assistant District Government Counsel Sulabh Prakash said.

The court rejected objection filed by Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee questioning maintainability of the plea.

A Delhi court on Thursday allowed police's application to produce Mehrauli killing accused Aaftab Amin Poonawala before a court through video conferencing.

Metropolitan Magistrate Aviral Shukla said according to the application submitted by police, the accused faced threat from miscreants and religious groups.

The court also permitted the city police to question Mehrauli killing accused Aaftab Amin Poonawala for five more days in its custody and also allowed his narco analysis test to be conducted to unravel the case.

A section of lawyers at court premises shouted slogans against the accused.

Around 100 advocates, practising at Saket district courts here, assembled around 3 pm when they came to know that the accused will be produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Aviral Shukla.

Actor Riya Sen joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Maharashtra's Akola district here on Thursday and walked with the political party's leader Rahul Gandhi.

Earlier this month, actor-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt joined the yatra in Hyderabad.

The official handle of the Indian National Congress shared a series of pictures of Sen with Gandhi as they participated in the 71st day of the foot march.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday continued to target late Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar, saying that he helped the British rulers and wrote a mercy petition to them out of fear.

Gandhi also dared the Maharashtra government to stop the Congress's Bharat Jodo Yatra, which is currently passing through the state.

Uddhav Thackeray, who heads a faction of the Shiv Sena, on Thursday said his party has immense respect for V D Savarkar and he does not approve of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's remarks on the freedom fighter.

Savarkar's grandson on Thursday registered a complaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly "insulting" Savarkar, police said.

Social media giant Meta has appointed Sandhya Devanathan as the Vice President of Meta India, the company said on Thursday.

She comes in place of Ajit Mohan who resigned from Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, early this month.

"I'm pleased to welcome Sandhya as our new leader for India. Sandhya has a proven track record of scaling businesses, building exceptional and inclusive teams, driving product innovation and building strong partnerships. We are thrilled to have her lead Meta's continued growth in India," Meta Chief Business Officer Marne Levine said in a statement.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday visited the family of a 17-year old girl, a football player, who died following an amputation of her leg after a minimally invasive procedure at a government facility to treat a ligament tear. The Chief Minister visited the family at their north Chennai residence here and extended his condolences and sympathies to them. He handed over a cheque of Rs 10 lakh as financial assistance to the family.

Stalin gave an appointment order to the deceased sportsperson's brother to work in the National Health Mission-Tamil Nadu as a Data entry operator. Also, he gave an order providing a flat for the family in a Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board developed facility here.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Thursday said allegations leveled against him in a mining lease case was baseless as he left for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Ranchi, where he is set to face questioning in connection with the matter.

Addressing media persons, the CM claimed that he was a victim of a conspiracy by the opposition.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri on Thursday said there is "no harm" in appointing a separate T20 captain and identified premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the ideal candidate.

In the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, Hardik will lead India in the three-match T20Is series in New Zealand, starting Friday.

"For T20 cricket, there is no harm in having a new captain," Shastri told reporters ahead of the first T20I here.

"Because the volume of cricket is such, that for one player to play all three formats of the game is never going to be easy.
