Hours after paying a visit to violence-hit Canning in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday night launched a help room at Raj Bhawan to respond to the grievances of the public, an official statement said.

Describing the help room as a “Peace Room”, the statement said it was opened keeping “in view the numerous representations received from citizens on criminal intimidation in pre-poll Bengal.” Rural polls are scheduled in the state on July 8.

Hundreds of women in several districts of Manipur took to the streets on Saturday night to condemn the violence in the state. Meitei women holding fire torches formed human chains on the streets in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Kakching districts from 7pm to 8 pm. 

At Kongba, a Meira Paibi leader Thounaojam Kiran Devi told reporters, "We are very much disappointed with the Centre and the state government for failing to contain the violence and provide security." They also protested against what they termed as “infiltration of illegal immigrants from Myanmar”.

Fifty-four people admitted at a district hospital in this Uttar Pradesh district have died in the last three days, health officials said on Sunday. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Jayant Kumar said two people have died due to heat stroke in Ballia district till Sunday. 

According to the health official, on average 7 to 9 deaths are reported daily in the hospital. "As per records of the district hospital, of the 54 deaths, 40 per cent of the patients had fever, while 60 per cent were suffering from other diseases. So far, only two persons have died due to heat stroke in the district," Kumar told PTI.

Olympic Games medallist Sakshi Malik on Sunday accused BJP leader and former Commonwealth Games gold medallist grappler Babita Phogat of trying to use the wrestlers for selfish motive and weaken their protest.

Sakshi and her husband Satyawart Kadian had also posted a video on Saturday alleging that it was Babita and another BJP leader Teerath Rana who had initially taken permission for the grapplers to protest at Jantar Mantar but later started advising them that the platform should not be used by parties for political purposes.

The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Sunday with rivers flowing above the danger level in different parts of the state. The Brahmaputra was flowing over the red mark in Nematighat in Jorhat district, a Central Water Commission (CWC) morning report said.

The Kopili in Kampur (Nagaon) and Puthimari in Kamrup district have also breached the danger level. Several other rivers, including the Brahmaputra at different places, were also flowing above the warning level, the CWC bulletin said.

Hyderabad zone's Vavilala Chidvilas Reddy has bagged the top rank in the IIT entrance exam JEE-Advanced, the results of which were announced on Sunday, officials said.

According to IIT Guwahati, which conducted the exam this year, Reddy secured 341 out of 360 marks. Nayakanti Naga Bhavya Sree from IIT Hyderabad zone is the topper among females with 298 marks.

Rajasthan's three districts -- Jalore, Sirohi and Barmer -- are reeling under a flood-like situation due to heavy rainfall caused by cyclonic storm Biparjoy, an official said on Sunday.

No loss of human life and livestock has been reported so far, he said. Officials said the Amry and the National Disaster Response Force have been requested to remain on standby in case of any eventuality.

The Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty on Sunday won a historic men's doubles title at the Indonesia Open here, becoming the first doubles pair from the country to claim a Super 1000 event.

The world No. 6 pair, who won a gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and bronze at the world championships last year, thrashed Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yika of Malaysia in straight games 21-17, 21-18.

A 20-year-old Indian-origin student has been sentenced to more than six years imprisonment for raping an "intoxicated" woman while she was on a night out with friends last year in Wales.

CCTV Footage showed Preet Vikal carrying the "intoxicated" woman in his arms and across his shoulders through Cardiff city centre.

"Adipurush" dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir Shukla on Sunday said the makers of the mythological epic film have decided to "revise some of the dialogues", after the Prabhas-starrer was criticised heavily for its pedestrian language.

Shukla, who has penned the Hindi dialogues and songs of the retelling of the Ramayana, said the amended lines will be added to the film by this week.
