As outrage poured in from all quarters including political parties, Muzaffarnagar Police booked the teacher accused of making communal comments and ordering her students to slap a Muslim classmate for not doing his homework. The teacher, Trapti Tyagi, was booked a day after a video showed her asking her students to slap the Class 2 boy at Neha Public School in Khubbapur village and also making a communal remark. Police booked Tyagi at the complaint of the boy's family, under IPC sections 323 and 504 -- both non-cognizable offences.
After the successful moon lander venture, ISRO is now gearing up for the launch of a solar mission in a week's time, likely on September 2, to study the Sun. It will be the first dedicated Indian space mission for observations of the Sun to be launched by the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency. Aditya-L1 is a fully indigenous effort with the participation of national institutions, an ISRO official said.
At least 10 persons were 'reported dead' in a fire that broke out inside a stationary train compartment in Madurai railway station the Southern Railway said, adding a 'gas cylinder' 'illegally' taken in led to the blaze. Jadavpur University has started the process of installing CCTV cameras on its campus, interim vice-chancellor Buddhadeb Sau said. The Haryana government ordered suspension of mobile Internet and bulk SMS services in the communally-charged Nuh district till August 28 in view of a call for a 'shobha yatra'. A mudslide caused by incessant rainfall blocked the Sonapur tunnel on NH 6 in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district on Saturday blocking traffic movement to Tripura, Mizoram and Assam's Barak valley. The mudslide was caused by incessant rainfall in the state in the past 24 hours. Earthmovers and personnel were put to work to clear the debris and the stuck vehicles, an NHAI official said.
A two-member inspection team of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has found lapses in internal safety audits of Air India and the regulator is probing the matter. According to the inspection report submitted to the DGCA, the airline was supposed to carry out regular safety spot checks in various areas of operations such as cabin surveillance, cargo, ramp and load but during a random inspection of 13 safety points, the team found that the airline prepared false reports in all 13 cases. Further, the inspection report noted that these forged spot check reports were not signed by the Chief of Flight Safety who has the authority to do it.
