A 51-year-old deputy director in the Woman and Child Development department of the Delhi government and his wife were arrested in connection with the rape of a minor girl. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has ordered the suspension of the officer and sought a report from Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar on the matter. The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) sent a notice to the Delhi Police, seeking the arrest. The accused had allegedly sexually assaulted his friend's daughter several times between November 2020 and January 2021. The matter came to light only when the girl, who is now in Class 12, recently narrated the incident to a counsellor at a hospital where she was admitted following an anxiety attack.

The ISRO on Monday released images of Lunar far side area captured by the Lander Hazard Detection and Avoidance Camera (LHDAC). Chandrayaan-3, launched on July 14, is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface. The ISRO said the Lander Module with rover in its belly is expected to touch down on the surface of the Moon around 6.04 PM on August 23.

A panel headed by former judge Gital Mittal to oversee relief and rehabilitation of victims of violence in Manipur submitted three reports to the Supreme Court, including one on the need to upgrade the compensation scheme for the strife-torn people of the state. On August 7, the top court ordered setting up of a committee of three former women high court judges to oversee relief and rehabilitation of victims and compensation to them besides asking former Maharashtra police chief Dattatray Padsalgikar to monitor the probe in criminal cases.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was among nine MPs who took the oath as members of the Rajya Sabha. The oath was administered by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in the Rajya Sabha chamber in Parliament House. Five Trinamool Congress MPs- Derek O'Brien, Dola Sen, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Prakash Chik Baraik and Samirul Islam also took the oath.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged money is being spent to spur hatred among communities, and claimed that a CPI(M)-backed union was involved in the recent death of a Jadavpur University fresher. The saffron party is also trying to use the Congress and CPI(M) against the TMC in Bengal, the chief minister asserted.

BRS President and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao announced the candidate list for 115 of 119 seats for the upcoming assembly polls. According to KCR, candidates have been changed in only seven assembly constituencies. He asserted that the BRS's friendship with Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM will continue.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) began interrogation of primary teachers in connection with its investigation into the school jobs scam in West Bengal, a senior official said. Out of the 344 teachers who have been summoned by the CBI, around 30 of them from Hooghly are being questioned at the probe agency’s office in Nizam Palace. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at multiple places in Calcutta and its neighbourhood in connection with the probe into irregularities in the recruitment for school jobs.

A landslide occurred on a road in Chamba in Uttarakhand's Tehri district, triggering fears that there could be some people and vehicles trapped in the debris. The SDRF rushed to the spot and launched a search and rescue operation at the site. Though there was no immediate confirmation of any casualty officially, locals said some vehicles and people might be trapped inside the debris.

Traders said they have decided to close onion auctions indefinitely in all the Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) in Maharashtra's Nashik district to protest against the Centre’s decision to impose a 40 per cent duty on the export of the kitchen staple. Nashik District Onion Traders Association president Khandu Deore claimed some agency has given a 'wrong report' to the central government and not taken into consideration the rise in expenditure on fertilisers, labour cost, etc on the production of onions.

K L Rahul and Shreyas Iyer were named in India's squad for the Asia Cup beginning August 31 while highly-rated young batter Tilak Varma earned a maiden call-up to the one-day format. There were question marks over the fitness of Rahul and Iyer, who are making a comeback after undergoing thigh and back surgeries respectively. India will open their campaign against Pakistan on September 2.
