Gujarat government was 'complicit and acted in tandem with one of the convicts' who had approached the top court with his plea for premature release in the Bilkis Bano case, the Supreme Court said and slammed the state government for 'usurpation of power' while granting remission to the convicts. The top court also nullified its May 13, 2022, order of another bench asking the Gujarat government to consider a remission plea of one of the convicts as the order was obtained by 'playing fraud on the court' and by suppressing material facts.

Maldivian government informed India's High Commissioner Munu Muhawar that the derogatory remarks made by three now-suspended deputy ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi do not represent its views. The Maldivian foreign ministry said the government is aware of 'derogatory remarks' on social media platforms against foreign leaders and that the personal views do not represent its position.

The editor of a vernacular newspaper in Manipur, who was arrested for allegedly publishing sensitive details in a report, has been released on bail, an official said. "The editor, Dhanabir Maibam, had published sensitive details in a news report," the government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said.

The row over the attacks on ED teams in West Bengal escalated with the agency on Monday saying that the state police registered an FIR only under bailable and non-scheduled offences in the incident in Sandeshkhali and has not provided a copy of the complaint to it. The Sandeshkhali attack took place when agency officials were trying to search the premises of Sahajahan Shekh, convenor of the local unit of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, on January 5.

Delhi High Court on sought response of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on a bail plea by AAP MP Sanjay Singh, arrested in a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy 'scam'. The Rajya Sabha member, arrested by the ED on October 4 last year, has challenged a trial court's December 22 order dismissing his bail plea in the money laundering case.

Bangladesh's main Opposition BNP, which boycotted the general elections of January 7 swept by Sheikh Hasina's party, demanded the cancellation of the 'dummy election' and the prime minister's resignation, questioning the accuracy of the voter turnout. The party also renewed its demand for a fresh election under a non-party polls-time government to establish a legitimate and accountable government.

Supreme Court agreed to consider listing pleas seeking review of its 2023 judgement upholding the validity of amendments made in a Tamil Nadu law to allow bull-taming sport 'Jallikattu' in the state. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice K M Joseph, since retired, had delivered a unanimous verdict on May 18, 2022 upholding the validity of amendment acts of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka which allowed 'Jallikattu', bullock-cart races and buffalo racing sport 'Kambala'.

Enforcement Directorate arrested former Haryana MLA Dilbag Singh and his aide Kulwinder Singh in an alleged illegal mining-linked money laundering investigation, official sources said. The former Haryana MLA and his aide have been taken into custody under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the two will be produced before a local court where the agency will seek their further custody in the illegal mining case as well in a fresh case of possession of illicit firearms.

In a history-making triumph, Lily Gladstone has become the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for best actress, said a spokesperson for the organization that hands out the awards. Gladstone, whose background is Blackfeet and Nez Percé, is only the second Native actress to receive any recognition from the Globes: Irene Bedard was nominated in 1995 for 'Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee,' a television movie.
