In a major setback to the Mamata Banerjee government, the Supreme Court of India upheld the Calcutta High Court order to deploy central armed forces across all districts of Bengal for conduct of the upcoming panchayat elections.
Dismissing the Special Leave Petition moved by the Bengal government and the State Election Commission which challenged the directions passed by the High Court last week, the Vacation Bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Manoj Misra observed: “The fact remains that the tenor of the order of the High Court is ultimately to ensure that free and fair election is conducted the entire State of West Bengal, since the state is conducting election for local bodies on a single day and having regard to the volume of booths which are being set up. We find that the order of the High Court does not call for any interference. The SLP stands dismissed.”

The Manipur High Court has admitted a review petition seeking to modify its March 27 order that directed the state government to recommend inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.
Based on the petition, the court on Monday issued notices to the Centre and the state government, seeking their response.The review petition by the Meitei Tribes Union (MTU) was admitted for hearing by a bench of Acting Chief Justice MV Muralidharan, who had also authored the March 27 order.

Asserting that India follows a zero-tolerance policy on spurious medicines, Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya has said 71 companies have been issued show-cause notices following concerns raised in some quarters about reported deaths due to contaminated India-made cough syrups and 18 of them have been asked to shut shop.

Highlighting the "alarming" surge in crimes, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has proposed a meeting of the cabinet with the Lieutenant Governor to discuss the matter. In a letter dated June 19, he wrote to LG V K Saxena over the rising crimes in the national capital and the dire need to deliberate on the issue.
"The seriousness of the situation can be gauged from the heart rending fact that four murders have taken place during last 24 hours in different parts of Delhi," read the letter.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday conducted an aerial survey of Jalore, Sirohi and Barmer districts that have been severely hit by the recent rains in the state and took stock of the situation.

The Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against TV show "Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah" producer Asit Kumarr Modi and two others following a complaint of sexual harassment by a woman actor, a police official said on Tuesday.
The FIR was lodged at Powai police station on Monday evening under Indian Penal Code Sections 354A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), he said.
