The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre and Attorney General R Venkataramani on two pleas by gay couples seeking a direction that their marriage be recognised under the special marriage law.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli heard the brief submissions of senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi before issuing the notices on the pleas.

The pleas sought direction seeking recognition of the marriage of two gay couples under the the Special Marriage Act.

More than 50 shops were gutted in a massive fire in the wholesale market of Bhagirat Palace area in North Delhi's Chandni Chowk even as the cooling operations are currently underway, police said on Friday. However, no injuries have been reported so far, they said.

According to the fire department, a call about the blaze was received at 9.19 pm on Thursday and 40 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India was correcting its past mistakes by celebrating its varied heritage and remembering its unsung bravehearts who were lost in the pages of history that was written as part of a conspiracy during the colonial era.

Addressing the 400th birth anniversary celebrations of Lachit Barphukan, Modi said the history of India was not just about slavery but also about its warriors.

"India's history is the history of warriors, the history of victory, the history of sacrifice, selflessness and bravery," he said.

Mehrauli murder accused Aaftab Amin Poonawala on Friday reached the Forensic Science Laboratory here for his next session of polygraph test, officials said.

He had undergone a marathon polygraph test of nearly eight hours on Thursday. However, officials at the facility found it difficult to record his statements as he was not well.

Australian citizen of Indian-origin Rajwinder Singh, who had fled that country after killing a woman four years ago and was carrying a 1 million Australian Dollars reward on his arrest, was nabbed by the Delhi Police on Friday, officials said.

The Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice against Singh (38) following which a non-bailable warrant was issued by the Patiala House Court on November 21 under the extradition act.

Union minister Piyush Goyal on Friday released the BJP's party manifesto 'Sankalp Patra' for Delhi MCD polls which includes bringing all services online and 100 per cent garbage processing.

Reading out the 12-point manifesto, Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta said all services of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be brought online through a mobile application within 100 days

A "tentative" rollout for a new Twitter verification system will begin December 2, Elon Musk tweeted on Friday.

Musk said all verified accounts would be manually authenticated before they are given one of three check marks.

Verified companies will receive gold check marks, governments will get grey ones, and individuals (celebrities or not) will have the social network's traditional blue checks.
