The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to constitute a special bench to hear a plea by Bilkis Bano, who was gang-raped during the 2002 Gujarat riots, against the remission of sentence of 11 convicts in the case.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala assured Bano, represented through her lawyer Shobha Gupta, that the new bench will be formed.

The Delhi High Court has reserved its order on the bail plea of jailed former AAP minister Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

He was arrested on May 30 last year by the agency and is accused of having laundered money through four companies allegedly linked to him.

Central universities in the northeastern region and HNBGU in Uttarakhand have been exempted by the Ministry of Education (MoE) from undertaking admissions for undergraduate courses through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG 2023.

In a letter to the registrars of the exempted universities, the MoE cited “geographical conditions, hilly terrain, far-flung location, limited digital connectivity, infrastructure etc” as impediments to conducting the CUET in Northeastern regions as reported by The Indian Express.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review the Covid situation amid rise in cases in the country and also took stock of the public health preparedness, officials said.

India has recorded 1,134 new coronavirus cases, while the active cases increased to 7,026, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.

Finance minister Kailash Gahlot on Wednesday presented a Rs 78,800 crore budget in the Delhi assembly for the financial year 2023-24 with the announcement of nine schemes as part of the G-20 preparations.

The Delhi government's budget size for 2022-23 was Rs 75,800 crore and Rs 69,000 crore in the preceding year.

The Uttarakhand Police on Tuesday conducted a combing operation at gurdwaras, hotels and in areas on the Indo-Nepal border in Udham Singh Nagar district in search of radical preacher Amritpal Singh and his associates, who are on the run after the Punjab Police launched a crackdown against them.

The police kept searching for these criminals across the district, City Superintendent of Police Manoj Katyal said here.

The Congress on Wednesday claimed that the government wants the party to take back its demand for a JPC on the Adani issue and in return it would drop the call for an apology over Rahul Gandhi's remarks in the UK, asserting there was no question of any such compromise.

Addressing a press conference, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said efforts are being made since the last few days that a "formula" or middle path is found with both the Opposition and the government relenting.

The Delhi Police has removed extra barricades outside the UK High Commission here but the security remains intact, officials said on Wednesday, a move that comes days after the tricolour at the Indian High Commission in London was pulled down by Khalistani activists.

"The security arrangements outside the British High Commission here are intact. However, barricades placed on the pathway towards the Commission that created hurdles for commutation have been removed," a senior police officer told PTI.

A Delhi court on Wednesday sent former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to 14-day judicial custody in a money laundering case arising out of the excise policy matter.

Special Judge M K Nagpal sent the senior AAP leader to jail till April 5 after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) produced him on conclusion of his custodial interrogation in the matter.

At least 13 people were killed and more than 90 injured in Pakistan and Afghanistan after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck late on Tuesday, government officials said.

 At least nine people were killed and 44 injured in northwest Pakistan, a Pakistani government official said, and hospitals in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were put into a state of emergency overnight.
