In a spot inquiry into the Sandeshkhali case in West Bengal, the NHRC has flagged 'several instances of atrocities', saying it indicates that there was a 'violation of human rights' due to 'negligence' in the prevention of such incidents. The rights panel has made several recommendations and sought an action taken report (ATR) within eight weeks on each of the recommendations made therein from the government of West Bengal, the NHRC said in a statement.

A special NIA court in Bengaluru granted the national agency 10 days custody of two accused in the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case for further investigation. The accused were brought to the state capital from Calcutta on transit remand, for their alleged role in March 1 blast at Rameshwaram Cafe here, which left 10 people injured.

U.S. intelligence analysts and officials said that they expected Iran to strike multiple targets inside Israel within the next few days in retaliation for an Israeli bombing April 1 in the Syrian capital that killed several senior Iranian commanders. Iran is not expected to target them in order to avoid a direct conflict with the United States, according to U.S. and Iranian officials who spoke anonymously about the expected attacks, which they were not authorised to discuss publicly.

CBI has told a special court in Delhi that Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha had allegedly 'threatened' Aurobindo Pharma promoter Sharath Chandra Reddy to pay an amount of Rs 25 crore to the AAP for the five retail zones allotted to his firm under the Delhi government's excise policy. Reddy, who was an accused in a money-laundering case linked to the alleged liquor scam in Delhi, had turned an approver in the case that is being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on April 15 Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea against a high court order that has upheld his arrest in a money-laundering case stemming from the alleged excise policy scam. In a massive blow to the chief minister, the high court has upheld his arrest in the money-laundering case, saying the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was left with 'little option' after he skipped repeated summonses and refused to join the investigation.

A man began stabbing people at a busy Sydney shopping center before he was fatally shot, leaving multiple people including a small child injured, police said. Five of the victims and the suspect died, Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke said.

Police have registered two cases against senior Congress leader and the party's Bastar Lok Sabha seat candidate Kawasi Lakhma in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district for allegedly violating the model code of conduct through his alleged objectionable remarks, officials said. While an FIR was registered against him at Mirtur police station for allegedly making an objectionable remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, another case was registered at Kutru police station for his alleged statement against police and administration, a district official said.

RJD, the largest constituent of Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, released its election manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls, promising 1 crore government jobs and Rs 1 lakh per year to 'sisters' from poor families on Raksha Bandhan. "If the INDIA bloc comes to power at the Centre, the RJD will ensure that unemployed youth across the country get 1 crore government jobs... the process will start on Independence Day this year... it will be like 'berozgaari se azadi' (freedom from unemployment)," Tejashwi Yadav told reporters.

A major fire broke out in Dum Dum area of Calcutta, gutting several shanties in a slum, officials said. At least eight fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the blaze, as thick smoke and flames were seen billowing from the shanties, which were predominantly made of plastic and other flammable materials, they said
