Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a fresh broadside against the Opposition in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, saying the more "keechad" (dirt) they will fling, the bigger "kamal" (lotus) will bloom.

Amid slogan shouting by MPs from TMC, Congress and other opposition parties from the Well of the House, Modi began replying to the debate on the motion thanking the President for her address to the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at the start of the Budget Session, and accused the Congress of adopting only "tokenism" to solving problems the country faced.

Anit Thapa, the chief executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), called on Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in Calcutta on Wednesday and sought to strengthen the hill body at a time when Opposition parties are calling to scrap the GTA and raising the pitch for Gorkhaland state.

“I raised 31 issues that include strengthening the GTA, issues regarding budget, education, health among others. The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and the chief minister gave a patient hearing to the issues raised by me,” said Thapa.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval called on Russian President Vladimir Putin and agreed to continue work towards implementing the India-Russia strategic partnership, the Indian embassy in Moscow said on Thursday.

"NSA Ajit Doval called on HE President Putin. Wide-ranging discussion on bilateral and regional issues. Agreed to continue work towards implementing the India-Russia strategic partnership," the embassy tweeted.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday granted bail to Chitra Ramkrishna in the money laundering case related to alleged illegal phone tapping and snooping of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) employees, saying prima facie there are reasonable grounds to believe she is not guilty.

Justice Jasmeet Singh granted bail to the former NSE managing director on a personal bond of Rs one lakh and two sureties of the like amount.

The death toll from the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria earlier this week rose to more than 17,500 on Thursday, as rescuers scrambled for survivors trapped beneath the rubble in freezing winter conditions.

There were 14,351 people confirmed dead in Turkey, Vice President Fuat Oktay said.

More than 16 lakh Indians renounced their Indian citizenship since 2011 including 2,25,620 last year, according to data provided by the government in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar presented the details while replying to a question. 

He said the number of Indians who renounced their Indian citizenship in 2015 was 1,31,489, while 1,41,603 people gave it up in 2016 and 1,33,049 in 2017.

In 2018, the number was 1,34,561, while 1,44,017 Indians renounced their citizenship in 2019, 85,256 in 2020 and 1,63,370 in 2021.

The number in 2022 was 2,25,620, according to the minister.

A volunteer organisation has sought Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's intervention for the rehabilitation of two elephants used for tourist rides at Amber Fort, near Jaipur.

Video footage shows one of the elephants, Malti, repetitively swaying and bobbing its head, which are signs of severe psychological distress in captive elephants, said Khushboo Gupta, Director of Advocacy Projects, PETA India.

Security forces on Thursday busted a hideout and recovered ammunition and explosive material in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, sources said.

A team of police, assisted by the Army, launched a search operation in the Naka Manjari area. It busted a hideout and recovered ammunition and explosive material, they said.

Ten people were injured after a leopard strayed into the district court complex here on Wednesday, triggering panic and a four-hour operation to catch the animal. "The leopard was tranquilised following a joint operation of police and the forest department," DCP (City) Nipun Agrawal said, adding that arrangements are being made to cage the animal. According to police, the leopard first attacked a cobbler on the ground floor of the court complex in the Kavinagar area of the district before heading to the first floor.

The animal's presence in the chief judicial magistrate court complex triggered panic and sent people running for their lives. While some ran towards the staircase, others locked themselves up in offices and washrooms.
