Qatar has released eight jailed former Indian Navy personnel and seven of them returned home, 46 days after their death sentences handed last October were commuted to jail terms of varying duration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be travelling to Doha in Qatar on February 14 after his visit to the United Arab Emirates, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said.

In a massive setback to Congress ahead of Lok Sabha elections, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan quit the Congress, amid speculation that he is veering towards BJP. Chavan said he has not taken any decision yet on joining the ruling BJP and will decide on his next political move in a couple of days.

There will be a complete ban on gathering, processions or rallies and entry of tractor trolleys carrying people in the national capital as the Delhi Police has imposed Section 144 for a month in the view of intended widespread tension and 'social unrest' due to the farmers' 'Delhi Chalo March' on February 13. The order shall come into force on February 12 and shall remain enforce up to March 12.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and several other MLAs of the party were stopped from visiting the unrest-hit Sandeshkhali area, with the police citing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC clamped in the area. Post-suspension, Adhikari along with other BJP MLAs boarded a bus to go and meet locals of Sandeshkhali, who have alleged sexual harassment by absconding TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters.

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has decided to reduce the duration of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Uttar Pradesh in view of the state board examinations for Classes 10 and 12, party members said. The yatra was earlier scheduled to remain in Uttar Pradesh till February 26.

Israeli military rescued two hostages in a dramatic raid under fire from the Gaza Strip early Monday, marking a small but symbolically significant success in its quest to bring home over 100 captives believed to be held by the Hamas militant group. At least 50 Palestinians were killed in airstrikes that were part of the raid, according to Palestinian hospital officials.

Crisis-hit SpiceJet plans to hand out pink slips to at least 1,000 employees in the coming days as the airline works to significantly reduce costs and streamline operations of its depleted aircraft fleet, officials said. A final decision on the quantum of layoffs is expected this week, one of the officials in the know said.

Marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum, who was set to be a superstar of long-distance running and was a top contender for gold at the Olympics in Paris this year, was killed along with his coach in a car crash in Kenya. Kiptum was 24 and one of the most exciting prospects to emerge in road running in years, having broken the world record in only his third appearance in an elite marathon.
