Stepping up its attack on the government over the NEET exam issue, the Congress questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "silence" on the matter and asserted that only a Supreme Court-monitored forensic probe can safeguard the future of lakhs of young students. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that the Modi government has started "covering up the NEET scam" through Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Three days after a blaze erupted in a closed restaurant in Park Street area, another massive fire broke out in a shopping mall in the southern part of Calcutta, a fire department official said. The fire broke out around 12.15 pm at a bookstore on the third floor of the shopping mall and then spread to the food court area, the official said, adding that several glass panes of the mall had to be broken to let out the smoke that engulfed the premises.

The mortal remains of 31 Indians, including 23 Malayalees, who died in the Kuwait fire tragedy were received at the international airport in Kochi by Central and state ministers, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who paid tributes to the deceased. Of the 45 mortal remains carried by the IAF C30J aircraft, 31 were received at the airport here.

The bones and remains allegedly of Sheena Bora that were recovered by police in Raigad in Maharashtra are not traceable, the prosecution told a Central Bureau of Investigation court that is conducting the trial in the case. he court is currently recording the testimony of the forensics expert who had first examined the bones recovered by Pen police in 2012 from the spot where Sheena Bora's burnt body was buried.

Calcutta High Court wondered whether the West Bengal governor was under "house arrest”, and said the Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari can visit the Raj Bhavan along with alleged victims of post-poll violence to meet C V Ananda Bose if permission is granted by his office. Justice Amrita Sinha directed that the LoP can visit the Governor House along with the people allegedly affected by violence in the state after the Lok Sabha polls, on the basis of permission granted by the Raj Bhavan.

The wholesale inflation rose for the third consecutive month in May at 2.61 per cent on account of rise in prices of food articles, especially vegetables, and manufactured items. "Positive rate of inflation in May, 2024 is primarily due to increase in prices of food articles, manufacture of food products, crude petroleum & natural gas, mineral oils, other manufacturing etc," the Ministry of Commerce & Industry said in a statement.

At least six people have been killed this week and around 2,000 tourists stranded in India's Himalayan state of Sikkim in landslides and floods after incessant rainfall, officials said. Heavy rains triggered landslides at several locations in Mangan district, which covers north Sikkim and lies about 100 km (60 miles) north of the state capital Gangtok, the local government of the northeastern Indian state said.

Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty hit their new closing lifetime highs on Friday, following buying in market heavyweights HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries and Mahindra & Mahindra amid encouraging export data. Among the 30 Sensex companies, Mahindra & Mahindra, Titan, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Tata Motors and Asian Paints were the biggest gainers.

Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to "immediately” order a cease-fire in Ukraine and begin negotiations if Kyiv started withdrawing troops from the four occupied Ukrainian regions and renounced plans to join NATO. “We will do it immediately,” Putin said in a speech at the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow.
