Former Union Minister Milind Deora on Sunday joined the Shiv Sena in the presence of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde after quitting the Congress earlier in the day. Deora was upset over the past few days after Shiv Sena (UBT) laid claim to the South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat, which he had represented earlier.

Two more persons were arrested in connection with an attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials at Sandeshkhali on January 5, taking the number of arrests in the case to four, a senior police officer said. While one of the accused was arrested from a fishery at Nazat, the other was rounded up from Minakha, both in North 24 Parganas district, the police officer said.

A day after the five accused in the Parliament security breach were brought back to Delhi following their polygraph, narco-analysis and brain mapping tests, a police source claimed that Manoranjan D was the mastermind behind the incident. All six accused -- Sagar Sharma, Manoranjan D, Amol Shinde, Neelam Azad, Lalit Jha and Mahesh Kumawat -- were presented before the Patiala House court on Saturday which sent them to judicial custody, police officials said.

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has asked India to withdraw its military personnel from his country by March 15, a senior official in Male said, nearly two months after Male sought their removal. Maldives and India have set up a high-level core group to negotiate the withdrawal of troops.

Supreme Court is scheduled to deliver on January 16 its verdict on former Andhra Pradesh chief minister and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu's plea challenging the high court order refusing to quash the FIR against him in the Skill Development Corporation scam case. The Andhra Pradesh High Court had on November 20 last year granted him regular bail in the case.

A massive fire broke out in the forest area in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, prompting the Army to launch an operation to bring the fire under control with the help of other security agencies. A major forest fire broke out near the Dera Ki Gali area of the district, threatening the lives of scores of people and infrastructure in the early hours of Sunday, officials said.

The central government ordered a ban on non-essential construction work and plying of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers in Delhi-NCR amid worsening air quality in the region. Anticipating a prolonged period of severe air quality, the committee decided to implement GRAP Stage-III curbs ('severe' air quality index (AQI) range) immediately to prevent further deterioration.

North Korea fired an apparent intermediate-range missile off its east coast, South Korea said, as tensions run high after Pyongyang's recent launches of an intercontinental ballistic missile and its first military spy satellite. In November, North Korea said it successfully tested new solid-fuel engines designed for intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the country's north-central region of Noto for the first time since the deadly Jan. 1 earthquakes to alleviate growing concern about slow relief work and the spread of diseases in evacuation centers.  More than 20,000 people, many of whom had their homes damaged or destroyed, are taking refuge at about 400 school gymnasiums, community centers and other makeshift facilities, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency report.
