A special CBI court on Monday remanded Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in five-day custody of the central probe agency till March 4, a day after his arrest in the excise scam case.

Special judge M K Nagpal allowed the CBI's plea for the custodial interrogation of Sisodia.

AAP leaders and workers staged a protest against the BJP here on Monday over the arrest of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and charged that its government was misusing central agencies to target its political rivals.

Sisodia was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22.

A largely peaceful voting in the assembly polls with a turnout of over 73.65 per cent was reported from Nagaland, which was earlier a hotbed for militants, till 3 pm on Monday and  Nearly 64 per cent of 21.6 lakh electors exercised their franchise till 3 pm in the Meghalaya Assembly elections, as polling remained largely peaceful since morning, officials said on Monday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the Shivamogga airport with a lotus-shaped terminal. The event coincided with the 80th birthday of Karnataka BJP strongman and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa. 

Shivamogga is the home district of Yediyurappa, a four-time Chief Minister. The new airport has been developed at a cost of around Rs 450 crore. The passenger terminal building of the airport can handle 300 passengers per hour.

The virus that drove the COVID-19 pandemic, killing close to 7 million people globally, most likely emerged from a laboratory leak in China, according to a US media report, citing a classified intelligence report recently provided to the White House and key members of Congress.

The Huanan market in central China's Wuhan city was the epicentre of the pandemic. From its origin there, the SARS-CoV-2 virus rapidly spread to other locations in Wuhan in late 2019 and then to the rest of the world.

The Supreme Court on Monday said it will hear on March 14 the pleas related to a coal block allocation in Chhattisgarh to the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL) and mining operations by Adani Enterprise Limited (AEL).

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud was told by senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for RRVUNL that the extraction of coal is halted and the whole matter is at “standstill” and hence, the case needed to be heard.

Meanwhile, The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has upheld the 2019 Resolution Plan of Adani Power's bid for Korba West Power and has asked Shapoorji Pallonji & Co to pursue arbitration proceedings for pending claims.

Twitter Inc has laid off at least 200 employees, or about 10 per cent of its workforce, the New York Times reported late on Sunday, in its latest round of job cuts since Elon Musk took over the micro-blogging site last October.

The layoffs on Saturday night impacted product managers, data scientists and engineers who worked on machine learning and site reliability, which helps keep Twitter's various features online, the NYT report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Supreme Court on Monday extended till March 3 the interim bail granted to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a case related to his alleged objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Assam Police had last week arrested Khera in the case.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said Kashmiri Muslims are ashamed over the killing of a Kashmiri Pandit and hit out at the government for claiming that normalcy has been restored in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sanjay Sharma (40), who worked as an ATM guard, was shot in the chest at point-blank range by terrorists barely 100 metres from his residence in the Achan area of Pulwama district at around 11 am on Sunday. He was rushed to a hospital by passersby but succumbed to the injuries.

The Tagore Memorial Grove and walking museum, one of the first in the United States to spread the message of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's borderless world, has been inaugurated here in Texas.

Tagore Grove, a free and open-air, permanent memorial of the poet's words and thoughts, depicting his message of love, universalism and a borderless world, was inaugurated on Saturday at the Ray Miller Park in Houston in the presence of the enthusiastic diaspora, complete with Vedic chants, presentation and recitation of Tagore's musical compositions.
