Israeli warplanes struck targets across Gaza overnight, as well as two airports in Syria and a mosque in the occupied West Bank allegedly used by militants, as the two-week-old war with Hamas threatened to spiral into a broader conflict. For days, Israel has seemed to be on the verge of launching a ground offensive in Gaza as part of its response to Hamas' deadly October 7 rampage.

Israel says Hamas has freed two American hostages who had been held in Gaza since militants rampaged through southern Israel October 7. US has decided to send a Terminal High Altitude Area Defence system as well as additional Patriot battalions to the Middle East to increase its force posture there following recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces across the region, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging that the government's recent orders asking officials to 'showcase' the achievements of the last nine years was 'politicisation' of the bureaucracy and demanded their withdrawal. He also referred to another order of the Ministry of Defence on October 9, 2023, directing soldiers on annual leave to spend time in promoting government schemes, making them 'soldier-ambassadors'.

Nomination papers of 173 candidates out of 174 filed for the November 7 Mizoram Assembly elections were found valid during scrutiny, officials said. Altogether 174 candidates filed nominations for 40 assembly constituencies and the documents were scrutinised on October 21.

Indian Army and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) with the assistance of the civil administration are working on a war footing to restore road connectivity between Mangan and Chungthang in north Sikkim, which suffered extensive damage in recent flash floods, a Defence official said. Several areas of north Sikkim ahead of Mangan have remained cut off since October 4, when a cloud burst over Lhonak Lake led to flash floods in the Teesta in the strategically important small Himalayan state that shares borders with China, Bhutan and Nepal.

ISRO prefers woman fighter test pilots or female scientists for its much-awaited human space flight programme Gaganyaan mission and it is possible to send them in the future, the space agency chief S Somanath said. His statement came a day after the ISRO successfully launched its TV-D1 test vehicle ahead of the human space flight mission Gaganyaan.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said the annual Dussehra rally held at the Shivaji Park in Mumbai has been a tradition and is a legacy of more than five decades, and claimed it is only a Thackeray who gives the vision and road map for Maharashtra and the country from the venue. Sena (UBT) head and former chief minister Thackeray will address the Dussehra rally at the iconic Shivaji Park in Dadar area here on Tuesday, while the CM Shinde-led Shiv Sena has finalised the Azad Maidan in south Mumbai for holding its rally.
