Opposition INDIA alliance finalised a 13-member committee comprising members of various parties that will function as the bloc's highest decision making body and will start work on seat sharing immediately, according to sources. Seat sharing will be finalised by September 30.

Government has constituted a committee headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind to explore the feasibility of 'one nation, one election', opening the possibility of Lok Sabha polls being advanced so that they could be held with a string of state assembly contests. The government's decision comes a day after it decided to call a special session of Parliament between September 18 and 22, the agenda for which is under wraps.

Mining and oil giant Vedanta ran a 'covert' lobbying campaign to weaken key environmental regulations during the Covid pandemic, Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) alleged in a new report. Vedanta's oil business, Cairn India, also successfully lobbied to have public hearings scrapped for exploratory drilling in oil blocks it won in government auctions.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said all arrangements have been made to receive G20 guests in Delhi and Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena is leading the efforts. Ahead of the G20 summit, which will be held at the newly built international convention centre at Pragati Maidan, several arterial roads and other important areas in the city have been given a facelift.

Amid the growing rift between the state government and Raj Bhavan, West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu alleged that the governor is acting at his own will by arbitrarily appointing interim vice chancellors in state universities where the terms of the VCs had expired in March-April this year. He also expressed dismay over reports that the governor has taken the responsibility of discharging functions in 14 of the 20 other universities in the state till the appointments are made.

The Visible Emission Line Coronagraph, the primary payload of Aditya L1,  first space based Indian mission to study the Sun, set for launch on September 2, will be sending 1,440 images per day to the ground station for analysis on reaching the intended orbit. Aditya-L1 will be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrangian Point 1 (L1), which is 1.5 million km from the Earth in the direction of the Sun.

Boxing star M C Mary Kom has sought the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure 'security forces prevent both warring groups from intrusion to Kom villages in Manipur.' At least eight persons have been killed and 18 injured, including two security personnel, in Manipur’s Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts following continuous gunbattle between Kukis and Meiteis over the last 72 hours.

Women staged a semi-nude protest in Assam’s largest city Guwahati against an eviction drive in Silsako Beel (lake) area as excavators ravaged to the ground several houses to clear alleged encroached land of the wetland. A couple whose house was demolished claimed that they had bought the land for Rs 4 lakh in 2007 from a local ‘committee’, which had assured them that no eviction would happen in the area.

The Supreme Court held that children born out of 'void or voidable' marriages are legitimate and can claim rights in parents' properties under the Hindu Succession law. The top court's verdict came on a 2011 plea pertaining to the vexatious legal issue of whether non-marital children were entitled to a share in the ancestral property of their parents under Hindu laws.
