Opposition INDIA bloc staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi against the suspension of 146 MPs from the two Houses of Parliament during the Winter session and called on people to unite to save democracy in the country. Addressing the gathering, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the leaders of INDIA parties have come together as democracy is under threat under the BJP government.

Security forces launched a massive cordon and search operation in the forest area of Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district and a National Investigation Agency team also visited there, a day after five army personnel were killed and two others injured in a terrorist attack. An official said aerial monitoring using helicopters is also being conducted and sniffer dogs have been pressed into service to track down the terrorists who ambushed two Army vehicles in the area on December 21 afternoon.

A Delhi court extended till January 5 the custodial interrogation of an accused in the Parliament security breach case. Police told the court that Jha was the mastermind of the entire incident and needed to be quizzed to unearth the entire conspiracy.

An organisation of West Bengal government employees commenced a three-day sit-in demonstration near the state secretariat 'Nabanna' demanding release of dearness allowance to them at par with their central government counterparts. Calcutta High Court allowed the government employees to hold the agitation near 'Nabanna' while directing them to wind up the sit-in demonstration by 4 pm on December 23.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the 'third national conference of chief secretaries' in the national capital next week, a senior government official said. Several officials, including young district collectors and magistrates, from states and Union Territories as well as several Union ministries are likely to attend the conference.

The Opposition BJP came down heavily on the Congress government in Karnataka for ‘flaunting rich fortune and luxury lifestyles’ after a video went viral showing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his cabinet colleague B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan in a private jet. In the video, Siddaramaiah is seen along with Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan and Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, among others.

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations on January 26 that would make him the sixth French leader to grace the prestigious occasion, people familiar with the matter said. India had invited US President Joe Biden to be the Republic Day chief guest but he expressed inability to travel to New Delhi in January.

Australia's Usman Khawaja said the black armband he wore in the test match against Pakistan was for a 'personal bereavement' and he would contest the International Cricket Council's (ICC) reprimand. The opener was reprimanded by cricket's global governing body for wearing the armband during the 360-run win over Pakistan in Perth.

'Fast and Furious' star Vin Diesel has been accused by his former assistant of sexual battery while working for him in 2010. Asta Jonasson filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles alleging that Diesel forced himself onto her in a hotel suite in Atlanta.
