A Nicaragua-bound plane that took off from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) carrying 303 Indian passengers has been grounded in France over suspected 'human trafficking', French authorities were quoted as saying. India's embassy in France has received consular access to its citizens after a the flight carrying 303 people, mostly Indians, was detained by French authorities during 'a technical halt' at an airport near Paris.

Mobile Internet services were suspended in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch and Rajouri districts as security forces continued their massive search operation to track down terrorists behind the recent ambush on two Army vehicles that left five soldiers dead, officials said. The Jammu and Kashmir administration announced compensation and jobs to the kin of the three civilians who were found dead near the site of an anti-terrorist operation in Poonch district.

An Israel-affiliated merchant vessel in the Arabian Sea off India's west coast was struck by an unmanned aerial vehicle, causing a fire, British maritime security firm Ambrey said. The fire on the Liberian-flagged chemical products tanker was extinguished without crew casualties in the incident 200 km (120 miles) southwest of Veraval, India, it said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah clarified that the administration was only contemplating lifting the ban on wearing hijab in educational institutions in the state and a decision will be taken after holding discussions at the government level. The clarification comes a day after he said that there was no restriction on wearing the religious head scarf in educational institutions and observed that choice of dress and food is personal.

A court in Delhi extended till January 5 the police custody of Mahesh Kumawat, who has been arrested in connection with the December 13 Parliament security breach case. A court has allowed Neelam, one of the six people arrested in the Parliament security lapse case to meet her lawyer, her family said.

India's maiden solar mission Aditya-L1 will reach its destination, the Lagrangian point (L1) which is located 1.5 million km from the Earth, on January 6, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman S Somanath has said. "When it reaches the L1 point, we have to fire the engine once again so that it does not go further. It will go to that point, and once it reaches that point, it will rotate around it and will be trapped at L1," he said.

An Israeli airstrike killed 76 members of an extended family, rescue officials said, a day after the UN chief warned again that nowhere is safe in Gaza and that Israel's ongoing offensive is creating 'massive obstacles' to the distribution of humanitarian aid. Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesman for Gaza's Civil Defence department provided a partial list of the names of those killed — 16 heads of households from the al-Mughrabi family — and said the dead included women and children.

The condition of music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan, who is undergoing treatment in a city-based hospital for prostate cancer, is stated to be critical, an official said. "Initially, he was reciprocating well to treatment. But after a cerebral attack, his condition started to deteriorate. He is critical and has been put on ventilator. Our doctors are keeping a constant watch on him," the official added.
