Congress has set up election committees for several states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh, besides a political affairs committee for Madhya Pradesh. Rajasthan PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasra was appointed the chairman of the Pradesh Election Committee in the state.

Expressing concern that TMC leader Sahajahan Sheikh, the prime accused in the case of assault on ED officials, may have 'crossed the border', West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose has instructed authorities to arrest him immediately and investigate his alleged connections with terrorists. His remarks that Sheikh has links with terrorists drew sharp criticism from the ruling TMC.

Kerala police have arraigned the former principal and two teachers of the school of engineering at CUSAT in connection with the stampede that happened during an annual tech festival in November 2023. Four people were killed and 60 were injured in the stampede that occurred before renowned singer Nikita Gandhi was to perform at a musical festival in the open-air auditorium of CUSAT.

Bangladeshis turned up in low numbers to cast their votes for the general elections likely to be won by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for a fourth straight term, amid sporadic violence and a boycott by the main opposition party BNP and its allies. Voting has been suspended at seven polling centres over irregularities, an election commission spokesman said.

Maldives government distanced itself from derogatory remarks made by its minister Mariyam Shiuna against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The government believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and international partners,” the Maldives government statement added.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' is expected to enter Jharkhand between February 2 and 5, a senior party leader said. The 6,713-km yatra from Manipur to Mumbai is set to start on January 14.

Counselling for post graduate medical admissions will be done only in online mode now and colleges will have to declare fees for each course beforehand, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has said underlining that no college will admit candidates on their own. There shall be common counselling for admission to post-graduate courses in medicine for all medical institutions in India solely based on the merit list of respective exams, the new regulations states.

Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Australian Open with an injury after playing just one tournament in his comeback from 12 months on the sidelines. The 22-time major winner initially said it seemed like more of a muscular problem than the tendon issue that caused him so much pain this time in 2023.

A court in Delhi has allowed AAP leader Sanjay Singh, arrested in a money laundering case linked to the alleged Delhi excise scam, to physically visit the returning officer for the Rajya Sabha election in connection with the filing of nomination papers. The judge directed Tihar jail authorities to produce Singh before the returning officer on January 8 and 10 'to enable him to submit his nomination papers in connection with the said election and also for scrutiny thereof'.
