Observing that the time given for filing nominations for the West Bengal panchayat elections is prima facie inadequate, the Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the State Election Commission to file its response on petitions by opposition politicians for extension of dates as also for deployment of central forces during the poll process on June 12.

The court said that the State Election Commission can fix a reasonable time for the candidates to file nominations, reports PTI. "Prima facie we are of the view that the time limit is inadequate," a division bench presided by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam said.

Delhi Police on Friday took wrestler Sangeeta Phogat to outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh's official residence here to recreate the sequence of events that led to the sexual harassment of which he has been accused. According to sources, Phogat was accompanied by women constables. 

The Delhi Police on Friday filed an action taken report (ATR) before a court here on a plea seeking an FIR against wrestlers for allegedly making "false allegations" against WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and indulging in hate speech.

Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar has received a “death threat” on social media, NCP claimed on Friday and appealed to party workers to maintain “peace at all costs”.

Taking cognisance of the matter, Mumbai police are in the process of registering a first information report, a senior police official said. A delegation of NCP workers led by Pawar’s daughter and Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule met Mumbai police chief Vivek Phansalkar demanding action.

The BSF has sought exemplary actions against two armed Border Guards of Bangladesh personnel who were found roaming inside Indian territory along the zero line in Garo Hills, officials said on Thursday.

The two BGB guards who were found roaming inside a village, were chased by locals on Wednesday. A video shot by an amateur showing this has gone viral on social media.

The Odisha government on Friday began demolishing the 65-year-old Bahanaga High School building that was used as a temporary morgue for victims of Coromandel Express.

The demolition was being carried out in presence of the school managing committee (SMC) members and Public Works Department officials. The decision to raze the building was taken after the SMC said it was old and not safe and that kids were reluctant to attend classes in the school where bodies were kept.

Manoj Sane (56), arrested for allegedly murdering his live-in partner Saraswati Vaidya, has claimed that she committed suicide by drinking poison and he only tried to dispose of her body by chopping it up, police said on Friday.

Sane, arrested on Thursday from Mira Road (East) area on the outskirts of Mumbai, also told the interrogators that he was HIV-positive and never had any physical relationship with the 36-year-old Vaidya, an official said. She died on the morning of June 3 after consuming poison with foam coming out of her mouth, and fearing that he would be held responsible for her death, he decided to dispose of the body, Sane allegedly told police.

At least three people were killed and many feared trapped when an illegally operated mine collapsed in Jharkhand’s Bhowra colliery area on Friday, an official said. The incident occurred at 10.30 am at Bhowra Colliery Area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), about 21 km from here.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sindri, Abhishek Kuma, said the exact number of people killed and feared trapped or injured would be known after rescuers are able to locate the victims.

E-commerce firm Amazon India on Friday signed an agreement with the government's premier agri-research body ICAR to guide farmers enrolled on its 'Kisan store' on scientific cultivation of different crops and help them achieve optimum yield and income.

A 'Kisan store' section was launched on the Amazon platform in September 2021. Farmers can avail doorstep delivery of agri input products via Kisan store through assisted shopping at Amazon Easy stores.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday visited a hospital that admitted four children injured a day earlier in a stabbing attack. The children were wounded on Thursday in the Alpine town of Annecy in the eastern Haute-Savoie region. 

Macron and his wife Brigitte arrived in the eastern city of Grenoble, where the hospital treating the injured children is located. The presidency said that Macron would also visit those who "contributed in helping and supporting (the children)."

Donald Trump has said he's been indicted on charges of mishandling classified documents at his Florida estate, igniting a federal prosecution that is arguably the most perilous of multiple legal threats against the former president as he seeks to reclaim the White House.

The Justice Department did not immediately publicly confirm the indictment. But two people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to discuss it publicly said Trump's team had been informed that he had been indicted on seven counts and that prosecutors had contacted lawyers to advise them of the indictment shortly before Trump announced it himself on his Truth Social platform.
