Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was elected Janata Dal (United) president at the meeting of the party's national executive which lauded his role in bringing together Opposition parties and spearheading the demand for caste census. Singh stepped down at the closed-door meeting and proposed Kumar's name, saying his leadership will be needed at this crucial juncture in the run up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls while he will be busy fighting his own election.

Congress said it will take a decision at an 'appropriate time' on whether party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi will attend the consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22. Congress' leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has also been invited to the ceremony.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has turned down AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal's request to appoint Raghav Chadha as the party's interim leader in the Upper House of Parliament. Earlier this month, Kejriwal had asked Dhankhar to appoint Chadha as the interim leader of the AAP in the Rajya Sabha as floor leader Sanjay Singh was in judicial custody.

Ayodhya is all geared up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit on December 30, with the city being decked up with flowers, murals and thematic ornamental columns amid heavy security deployment in the temple town. Modi will visit the town on December 30 to inaugurate the redeveloped Ayodhya railway station and a new airport.

Aditya L1, the Indian Space Research Organisation's solar mission, will reach the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system on January 6, which will enable the spacecraft to view the sun without any eclipses, ISRO chief S Somanath said. Lagrange point is a region where gravity between earth and sun will neutralise.

Delhi Police has sought the help of its Lucknow counterparts to trace a 'cyclist cobbler' who created cavities in the shoes of Parliament security breach case accused Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D to fit smoke canisters in them, sources said. Sagar first tried to modify the shoes himself but approached the cobbler, who visited Alambagh in Lucknow on a bicycle, after he was unsuccessful, the Delhi Police sources said.

GST officers have been given more time to issue demand notices for discrepancies in annual returns for 2018-19 and 2019-20 financial years. A notification has been issued by the finance ministry in this regard.

After three days of investigation into the blast near the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi, the Delhi Police is planning to register an FIR as they have found 'crucial evidence' pointing to a conspiracy to threaten the envoy, sources said. Officials of the Delhi Police, who are investigating the case, have scanned multiple CCTV footage around the site of the low-intensity blast and spotted a suspect who had come from Jamia Nagar in an auto-rickshaw.

The higher reaches of Darjeeling district of West Bengal may receive snowfall in the year-end and the New Year, the Met department said in a forecast on Friday that is likely to bring joy to tourists flocking to the hills. The Met department said rain or snowfall may occur at one or two places in Darjeeling district nestled in the eastern Himalayas in its forecast from December 31 to January 3 morning.

India's heaviest defeat in South Africa in the first Test at Centurion came along with a fine of 10 per cent of their match fees and Rohit Sharma's team being docked two crucial points in the World Test Championship (WTC). "Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after India were ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration," the ICC said in a release.
