The Election Commission has declared the dates for assembly elections to be held in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced that Tripura will head to polls on February 16 while Nagaland and Meghalaya will vote on February 27.

Shubman Gill on Wednesday became the fastest Indian to complete 1000 runs in ODIs as he reached the mark in 19 innings, surpassing the likes of Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.

Gill, who made his ODI debut in January 2019, also became the joint second-fastest to 1000 runs in terms of innings alongside Imam Ul Haq of Pakistan. Fakhar Zaman had crossed 1000 runs in 18 innings.

A helicopter crashed into a building in the city of Brovary, outside the Ukrainian capital on Monday morning, killing the Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyy, his deputy and a state secretary who were said to be headed to the front line on a visit.

According to Ukrainian police, 16 people were killed in the crash, including three children. Nine of them were on board.

Twenty nine victims of the accident were injured, 15 of them are children, Kyiv regional governor Oleksiy Kuleba said on Telegram.

Punjab Congress leader and former state finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal joined the BJP here on Wednesday.

Badal joined the party at the BJP headquarters in the presence of various leaders, including Union Minister Piyush Goyal. Earlier in his resignation letter to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Badal said he was "disillusioned" by the party.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said India and the Maldives are good neighbours and strong partners as he underlined that the two countries also together have a responsibility for peace and security in the region.

Jaishankar, who is here on the first leg of his three-day visit to the Maldives and Sri Lanka to further expand bilateral engagement with the two key maritime neighbours of India, made the remarks after his "productive discussions" with his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid.

With the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s (BRS) first public meeting in Khammam on Wednesday, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao aims to step on to the national platform while not losing sight of the local pressure points for the party.

The BRS meet at Khammam town will see Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav and CPI's D Raja sharing the dais with KCR.

Airspace restrictions will be in place in the national capital for eight days this month in view of the Republic Day preparations and celebrations.

There will be airspace curbs from January 19 to 24 as well as on January 26 and 29.

In an unprecedented move, the country's top wrestlers, including Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia and world championship medallist Vinesh Phogat, staged a protest against the "dictatorship" of national federation President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Wednesday.

The wrestlers did not share the exact details of their grievances or their demands but it was clear that they are fed up with the way the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is being run by Singh, who is also a BJP MP from Kaiserganj.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has seized a cache of weapons and ammunition dropped by a Pakistani drone around eight kilometres inside the Indian territory from the international border in Punjab, a senior official said on Wednesday.

BSF troops heard the humming sound of the drone coming from Pakistan in the Uncha Takala frontier village area of Gurdaspur district around 11:50 pm on Tuesday, the official said.

A rare orange coloured bat, which is a "near threatened" species, has been spotted in Chhattisgarh's Kanger Valley National Park, officials said on Wednesday.

The animal, also known as 'painted bat' and characterised by bright orange and black wings, was sighted at a banana farm in Parali Bodal village of the park on Monday, the national park's director, Dhammshil Ganvir, told PTI.
