Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Bongaon Municipality's former chairman Shankar Adhya in the early hours in connection with the alleged ration scam in West Bengal, officials said. Following the arrest, his supporters allegedly tried to block the investigators from taking him with them, besides hurling stones at their vehicles.

Unidentified arsonists set fire to at least five primary schools, including four polling booths, in Bangladesh, police said, the eve of a general election that the main Opposition party is boycotting. "We have intensified patrolling and remain on high alert to thwart any untoward incident," said Gazipur police chief Kazi Shafiqul Alam.

The panel on 'One Nation, One Election' led by former president Ram Nath Kovind has invited suggestions from the public 'for making appropriate changes in the existing legal administrative framework to enable simultaneous elections in the country'. The suggestions can be posted on the committee's website onoe.gov.in or sent by e-mail to sc-hlc@gov.in, a notice said.

Indian Naval forces are investigating suspected vessels in the North Arabian Sea to track down the pirates involved in an attempt to hijack a merchant vessel with 21 crew members including 15 Indians, officials said. The crew of the bulk carrier are now engaged in restoring the propulsion system, power supply and steering gear of the platform, the Navy said.

Alaska Airlines grounded all of its Boeing 737-9 aircraft late Friday, hours after a window and piece of fuselage on one such plane blew out in midair and forced an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon. The airline said the plane landed safely with 174 passengers and six crew members.

Lebanon's Hezbollah militia fired dozens of rockets at northern Israel on Saturday, warning that the barrage was its initial response to the targeted killing, presumably by Israel, of a top leader from the allied Hamas group in Lebanon's capital earlier this week. Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said that if Hezbollah does not retaliate for Arouri's killing in its stronghold south of Beirut, all of Lebanon would be vulnerable to Israeli attack.

More than 130 additional court files were unsealed in a lawsuit involving Jeffrey Epstein, providing yet more detail about the late millionaire financier's sexual abuse of underage girls and interactions with celebrities. The records are all related to a defamation lawsuit that one of Epstein's victims, Virginia Giuffre, filed in 2015 against the millionaire's girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, who was accused by multiple women of helping Epstein recruit underage victims.
