Fear has gripped Manipur for the last 48 hours with seven people getting killed in unabated ethnic violence. The region, already strained by months of conflict, has seen a surge in unrest marked by student protests, loss of life, and heightened security measures.

48 hours, 7 deaths
On Monday, two lives were lost in separate incidents. Neijahoi Lhungdim, a 50-year-old woman from the Kuki-Zo community, was found dead near a church in Kangpokpi's Thangbuh village. Reportedly, she was caught in crossfire. In another incident, Limkholal Mate, an ex-serviceman, was found dead in Sekmai village of Imphal West district after he was allegedly kidnapped.
On Sunday, five people had died because of the violence in the state.
Students take to the streets
Hundreds of students, many in school uniforms, took to the streets of Imphal leading to a clash with the police on Monday. The protesters demanded the removal of the Director General of Police and the security advisor to the state government, citing their alleged failure to control the violence. The protests quickly spread and demonstrators attempted to storm the residences of the Manipur Governor and Chief Minister.

As the student-led protests intensified at Imphal, police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. In Thoubal, the situation escalated further, with authorities resorting to stun grenades. The clashes left at least 20 people injured.
A night of vigil
As night fell, the protests took on a different form. Hundreds of students camped at Khwairamband Women Market, their longing for peace and harmony illuminated by candlelight.
Curfew and restrictions imposed
Authorities imposed strict measures across several districts on Tuesday. Indefinite curfews were clamped in Imphal East and West districts. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 (2) of BNSS were also put in place in Thoubal, limiting public gatherings and movement.
Continuing protests
Despite the restrictions, student demonstrations persisted on Tuesday. Protesters attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan, clashing with security forces near Congress Bhavan.
Police address the public
Inspector General of Police K Jayanta Singh addressed the media and confirmed the recovery of sophisticated rocket tails. The press conference was aimed at preventing misinformation and appealing for peaceful protests.
