A normal afternoon in Lucknow’s Transport Nagar turned tragic on September 7, as a three-storey building collapsed, killing eight and injuring 28. Workers in the motor workshop and warehouses were caught off guard when the structure suddenly gave way at around 4:45 pm.
Rescue teams, working overnight, recovered three more bodies, bringing the death toll to eight. The victims—Raj Kishore, 27, Rudra Yadav, 24, and Jagrup Singh, 35—were pulled from the debris.
Joint Commissioner of Police Amit Verma stated that there’s little chance of anyone else being trapped, though National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams remain at the site.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, returning from Ambedkar Nagar, is set to visit Lok Bandhu Hospital, where many of the injured are being treated. Among the injured is Akash Singh, a worker from the medical go-down, who recalled seeing a crack in one of the building's pillars shortly before the collapse.
The building, constructed four years ago, housed a motor workshop and warehouse on the ground floor, a medical go-down on the first, and a cutlery warehouse on the second floor.
Some construction work was reportedly underway at the time of the incident, raising concerns about the building’s structural integrity.
Defence Minister and MP from Lucknow Rajnath Singh spoke to the district magistrate regarding the incident and took stock of the relief work and the treatment of the injured.
BJP metropolitan president Anand Dwivedi also visited the site, offering support to the victims and their families.
