Students, alumni and faculty members of Salt Lake School organised a protest march on Tuesday to demand justice for the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-victim, and also in memory of Angikar, a student of the school who was recently killed in an accident.
Angikar Dasgupta, a student of Class 11 at the school in Salt Lake aka Bidhannagar in suburban Calcuta, died after he fell from a running bus and was run over. The collective voice also brought forth the harassment that they said his parents had to face from the police and the authorities following the incident.
The students in the march also spoke of the harassment that was meted out to the RG Kar victim’s parents, implying a structural failure on the part of the emergency services of the state and its police.
The students of SLS raised their voices to strongly condemn both the incidents.
“For the gathering, both the present and ex faculty members had joined us to show their support for the two bright souls,” Angikar’s mother said.
“Few students decided to curate a road graffiti in front of SLS’s entrance which reads as ‘Justice delayed is justice denied’ and ‘Aar Kobe?’ (If not now, then when)?”
To them the immediate aftermath of ignorance coupled with harassment has a stark similarity to what happened to the parents of the RG Kar victim on the morning of 9th August.
"Both Tilottama [one of the names given to the RG Kar victim] and Angikar are our children who have been victims to the absolute administrative failure and we are left with no option but to take to the streets as our last resort,” the mother said.
“People together will always be victorious,” she affirmed. Angikar is survived by his father, mother, and a young brother.
