The Indian Navy bid farewell to the UH-3H helicopter after 17 years of service in a ceremony at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam, on June 28, 2024. Presided over by Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena, the event celebrated the helicopter's legacy, with its officers and sailors in attendance.
The UH-3H will be succeeded by the Sea King 42C at INAS 350, continuing its operational expertise and enhancing naval capabilities. Bridging an era to an end, the de-induction of the UH-3H helicopter highlighted its significant contributions to Special Operations and Search and Rescue (SAR) missions. The helicopter's role in adapting to the dynamic maritime environment is a proud chapter in Indian Naval Aviation history, showcasing its ability to meet evolving operational demands effectively.
Inducted in 2009 at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam, the UH-3H helicopter, part of INAS 350 'Saaras', played a vital role in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and security operations. Its advanced Search and Rescue capabilities proved crucial during natural disasters, upholding the squadron's motto of "Strength, Valour and Perseverance" and ensuring maritime security with dedication.
As the UH-3H helicopter retires, one unit will be permanently displayed in Visakhapatnam, the ‘City of Destiny’, as a tribute to its service and to inspire future generations. During the ceremony, a commemorative plaque was handed over to the state government, symbolising the transfer and honouring the helicopter's enduring legacy in the region.
