In pictures: Calcutta Metro's Orange Line gears up for swift commutes as inauguration nears

Public transport in South-East Calcutta is about to get a lot quicker with Metro Railways planning to inaugurate the first phase of services on the 30-kilometer Orange Line which connects New Garia with Netaji Subhas Bose International Airport via Salt Lake and New Town. The first phase of services is all set to go green on a 5.4 kilometer truncated route from the Kavi Subhas (New Garia) terminal station to the Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Hospital crossing) station passing through the Satyajit Ray (Patuli), Jyotririndra Nandi (Mukundapur) and Kavi Sukanta (Kalikapur) stations en route along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. With speed trials and inspections by the Commissioner of Railway Safety already done at the said stretch, Metro officials maintained that the services would commence immediately after the Rail Bhavan’s nod.  The commencement of services at the first phase would quickly be followed up by connecting it to the second phase where the route would get extended up to the Beliaghata crossing, officials said, where four more stations – VIP Bazar, Ritwik Ghatak, Barun Sengupta and Beliaghata – would be added. While construction work at the stations are almost over, those at the elevated corridor and laying of tracks are to be completed soon, Metro authorities maintained.  Here’s a look at the five newly completed stations on the Calcutta Metro Orange Line.
