Filmmaker Jafar Panahi: A true critic of Iranian Government

Jafar Panahi and his iconic films have been an intrinsical part of the Iranian New Wave cinema. His indomitable spirit and his zeal for making cinemas which are reflective of the societal oppression, is a direct challenge to the Iranian government. Jafar Panahi has been targeted by authorities since his 1995 feature film debut 'The White Balloon' won the Camera d'Or at Cannes. Panahi was arrested in July 2022 in Tehran and ordered to serve a six-year sentence for "propaganda against the system" that had been suspended after he served two months in 2010. The film made in the director's apartment is a depiction of a day in his life spent in isolation. The film was smuggled out of the country in a USB stick hidden in a cake.

The plot is of a screenwriter who lives a secluded, isolated life at his seaside home and whose life gets disturbed by a woman fleeing the police. Panahi secretly filmed the movie with a small crew at his own seaside home.

At the first glance, the audience might expect only random encounters as Panahi drives his taxi through the streets of Tehran. But it will soon become clear to the audience, the passengers or the characters are playing the scripted roles.
