Cyclone Remal leaves Bengal and Bangladesh counting deaths and damage

Packing speeds of up to 135 kph (84 mph), Cyclone Remal crossed the area around the country's southern port of Mongla and the adjoining Sagar Islands in Bengal late on Sunday, weather officials said, making landfall at about 9 p.m.

Waterlogged C.R. Avenue after the landfall of Cyclone 'Remal' on Monday morning, in Calcutta. The cyclone caused heavy rainfall and flooding, submerging major city roads. Four people died due to electrocution taking the death toll in the state to six, Reuters reported, quoting authorities. Nearly 15,000 houses in 24 blocks and 79 municipal wards, mostly in the southern coastal areas of Bengal.

Disaster response force personnel remove uprooted trees from a road, in Calcutta. Cyclone Remal's fierce winds uprooted thousands of trees, blocking roads and disrupting traffic. Authorities reported that at least 2,140 trees were uprooted across Bengal.

Commuters rush to catch trains amid rainfall owing to Cyclone 'Remal', outside a railway station, in Calcutta. Train services in the Sealdah South section of Eastern Railway resumed at 9 am after remaining suspended for three hours in the morning, an ER official said. Flight services from the Calcutta airport also resumed on Monday morning after being suspended for 21 hours in view of the cyclone, a senior Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said. Metro Railway services in the north-south corridor were disrupted in parts for four-and-a-half hours on Monday morning.

A commuter wades through a waterlogged road amid rains after the landfall of cyclone, in Bengal's Howrah. The cyclone led to severe flooding in several areas, affecting thousands of homes and displacing many residents. Major arterial roads in Calcutta like Central Avenue and College Street in central Calcutta and pockets of Ballygunge, Dhakuria and Behala in the south continued to remain waterlogged during the later part of the day as well.

A home destroyed in Kakdwip, around 85 km south of Calcutta, on Monday, the morning after cyclone Remal battered the area. Many homes of the town in Bengal's South 24 Parganas district were partially or completely destroyed by the cyclone's winds. An estimated 15,000 houses in 24 blocks and 79 municipal wards were damaged in Bengal, mostly in the southern coastal areas, a senior state government official said on Monday afternoon.

Calcutta Police Disaster Management Group personnel and personnel of different police stations have been making efforts all night to remove numerous trees uprooted in the storm to keep traffic moving.
