Junior doctors in West Bengal have inaugurated the Abhaya Gallery at their colleges to mark three months since the rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
This gallery, they said, is a way for them to remember the injustice and keep their voices alive in demanding safety and respect. The gallery, named Abhaya – meaning fearless, one of the names given to the RG Kar victim – is a reminder of the student community’s determination against any threat to their safety, the doctors said.
The gallery showcases symbols that the junior doctors used during their three-month-long protest.
Main items like a brain, broom, spine and a pot labelled “durnitir handi” (showcasing corruption) are among the most important symbols that students carried to different protest locations.
These items showcase the students’ struggle against corruption and the threatening environment that has affected Bengal’s medical colleges.
For these junior doctors, the Abhaya Gallery is more than just a display. It is a symbol of their fight to create a safer and corruption-free atmosphere within medical colleges.
By inaugurating this gallery, they hope to keep their concerns in public view and encourage others to support their cause.
The RG Kar rape and murder case is with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and is under the Supreme Court’s review.
While they await justice, the students are using the gallery to in the memory of their colleague and add the importance of accountability in medical institutions.
