A day in the life of the Sundarbans, through the eyes of an award-winning photographer

South 24 Parganas, Bengal-based photographer Supratim Bhattacharjee recently won the Mangrove Photography Awards 2024 for his powerful image of a young girl after a storm in Frazerganj, Sundarbans during the Covid lockdowns in 2020. He captured several other images the same cyclonic day, reflecting how climate change is raising sea levels and threatening the people who live in the world’s largest mangrove forest area

The award-winning photo

This photograph of Pallavi Mondal, 11, won Supratim Bhattacharjee the Mangrove Photography Award. Pallavi’s house, which included a tea shop, had been completely submerged the previous night. “Her composed demeanour and resilient expression amid the chaos compelled me to capture her photograph, showcasing her strength in the face of such devastation,” Bhattacharjee told The Telegraph Online.
