With Barbiecore fashion becoming the talk of the town, hot pink could certainly qualify as the colour of the year 2022. The year, which saw celebrities readily experiment with their looks, also marked the return of micro-mini skirts and introduced us to outfits that broke gender stereotypes with style. Here’s a look at the major fashion trends of 2022.

Barbiecore & Valentino Pink

Pink took over the colour palettes this year with the Barbiecore trend coming into fashion. The pink hue, associated with Barbie dolls, found its way into the wardrobe of countless celebrities including Zendaya, Ranveer Singh, Janhvi Kapoor, Lizzo and even F1 star Lewis Hamilton.

Italian luxury fashion house Valentino took hot pink to another level with the launch of their Autumn/Winter 22 collection. Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli showcased 40 different silhouettes, all in the shade of hot pink, in the collection. Euphoria star Zendaya turned muse for the launch of the PP Pink (Pierpaolo Piccioli Pink) campaign as well, wearing everything hot pink.

The MET Gala 2022 also saw several stars, including Sebastian Stan, 101 Dalmatians actress Glenn Close and Nicola Peltz Beckham, sporting pink outfits.

Underbust gems

Priyanka Chopra sent the fashion world into a tizzy with her choice of outfits during her visit to India. The 40-year-old actress chose to accessorise her monochrome white outfit with underbust gems. While the accessory itself was quite miniscule, it made a definite fashion statement. Celebrities were quick to follow the trend. Film producer Gauri Khan also wore a black bodycon dress accentuated with an underbust gem at Manish Malhotra’s birthday bash.

Cut-out dresses

Alaya F quietly made a strong case for cut-out dresses this year. The 25-year-old was often seen in midriff baring silhouettes that accentuated her strong abs. The Freddy actress also walked the ramp at Lakme Fashion Week 2022 in an olive bodycon cut-out dress by Nikita Mhaisalkar.

Jumping on the cut-out dress bandwagon was Janhvi Kapoor who looked stunning in a black cut-out bodycon with white border for Mili promotions.

Puffy dresses

Priyanka Chopra and Sonam Kapoor had two things in common this year. Both the actresses became mothers this year and made statements with their standout fashion choices in puffy dresses. Priyanka, styled by Law Roach, wore a pink bodycon gown and a satin cape with big puffy sleeves for a Bvlgari event. Sonam, styled by her sister Rhea Kapoor, stood out in a big yellow poofy dress with asymmetrical sleeves. Both actresses opted for minimal jewellery to accentuate their dress.

Prints on men

Male celebrities this year broke out of their stereotypical fashion choices and opted for vibrant colours and stand-out prints. Most of the heavy lifting was done by Gen Z stars when it came to a vibrant fashion palette. Qala actor Babil Khan had quite a year in fashion with prints making a huge impact on his choices. For the premiere of his debut film, Babil wore a printed Anamika Khanna suit with distressed pants.

Phone Bhoot actor Ishaan Khatter also opted for a bold wardrobe with graphic prints, vibrant colours and a number of accessories.

Boxy suits for women

While male celebrities broke out of their usual colour palettes, female celebrities made a mark with their boxy fits. From celebrity stylist Rhea Kapoor to Liger actress Ananya Panday, the year saw a number of women opting for the suits.

Sleek silhouettes were also tried out with Mrunal Thakur. Recently the Sita Ramam actress posed in a satin lilac suit with a grey silk tie.

3D fashion

3D fashion pieces found their way into the fashion world this year. The two-time Emmy Award winner Zendaya wore a white lily silk gown from the Loewe’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection. The outfit was made up of a sleek white bodycon that stood out due to a huge 3D lily on the neckline.

Zendaya wasn’t the only celebrity sporting 3D looks. Konkona Sen Sharma went for an all-black suit with a 3D back.

Gender-fluid fashion

Timothee Chalamet stole the show with his red backless halter neck blouse with matching pants for the premiere of his film Bones and All at the Venice Film Festival. A number of Hollywood celebrities including Harry Styles, Kristen Stewart and Billy Porter have opted to go the gender non-confirming route with their fashion choices.

Closer home, Darlings actor Vijay Varma made one fashion statement after the other with his outfit choices. Layering his clothes like a pro, Vijay posed at a fashion event in an all-black ensemble, complete with a long skirt. Ishaan Khatter was seen wearing beaded necklaces on numerous occasions, styled with his outfits.
