Bollywood veteran Zeenat Aman on Tuesday said she finds most designer outfits “unwearable” and her collection of such dresses is often left to “languish” in the closet.
“I am constantly tickled by my persona as a woman of high fashion. Those who know me know that I am quite the casual dresser. One who finds most designer outfits unwearable,” the actress wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of herself.
Recalling that one of her friends used to gift her haute couture items and tell her that they are going to “moulder” in her wardrobe, Zeenat said, “It’s an unfortunate fate shared by my most prized heirlooms. My mother’s exquisite saris, the most meaningful clothing I own, also languish in the depths of my closet.” She added, “Perhaps one day I will have the wherewithal to wear them or repurpose them into new outfits more suitable to my taste.”
Zeenat also paid tribute to costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, the first Indian to win an Academy Award, who has designed her costumes in over 15 movies including Satyam Shivam Sundaram. “She was prolific and meticulous, and soon after our first partnership had a mannequin made to my measurements. It would stand in her studio, and on this inanimate bust she would actualise the fantastical ideas that appeared in her mind. I only had to pop in very occasionally for trials, an arrangement that was most suitable to my schedule,” she said.
Zeenat also mentioned that Bhanu was the only designer who has come “close” to making outfits that were “as comfortable as they were sensual”.
On the work front, Zeenat last appeared in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s 2019 epic war drama Panipat alongside Arjun Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Kriti Sanon. She will soon be seen in Faraz Arif Ansari’s upcoming directorial Bun Tikki, a Manish Malhotra production that also marks her on-screen reunion with Shabana Azmi after the 1982 crime drama Ashanti.
Additionally, the actress has joined the cast of the upcoming Netflix series The Royals, which also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter. Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Panday, Vihaan Samat, Kavya Trehan, Sumukhi Suresh, Udit Arora, Lisa Mishra and Luke Kenny round off the show’s ensemble cast.
