The director’s cut versions of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Part I and II are set to hit Netflix on August 2, the filmmaker announced on Tuesday.
“REBEL MOON - THE DIRECTOR’S CUTS. Chapter One: Chalice of Blood. Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. August 2, only on Netflix,” the 58-year-old filmmaker wrote on X alongside stills from the films.
In an interview with Netflix in December 2023, Snyder revealed that the director’s cut will have an hour of extra content.
“The director’s cut is close to an hour of extra content, so I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way. The director’s [cut] is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career,” Snyder had said.
Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire received criticism after its release on December 21 last year despite reaching the top of Netflix’s charts. Based loosely on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, the story revolves around a young woman named Kora (Sofia Boutella), who leads a peaceful life on the farming moon of Veldt. However, the peace is disrupted when alien ships from Motherworld breach their moon. When the colony of people find themselves threatened day by day, Kora embarks on a journey to assemble a group of fighters willing to defend their home at the edge of the galaxy.
In the second part, Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver, Sofia Boutella’s Kora and her resistance group face off against the Imperium, led by the resurgent Admiral Atticus Noble. The film hit Netflix on April 19.
