Netflix will release a special Director’s Cut of the upcoming two-part film Rebel Moon with “close to an hour of extra content”, revealed filmmaker Zack Snyder during an interview with the streamer’s Tudum website.
Snyder said the Rebel Moon Director’s Cut would unleash an extended universe version of the epic space opera film. “The director’s cut is close to an hour of extra content, so I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way,” he added.
Snyder also said he had specifically crafted Rebel Moon scenes with an extended cut in mind. “With Netflix, we shot scenes just for the Director’s Cut…it gives that second kick at the can for big fans, like a real discovery that they would not [otherwise] get. I’m really excited about it!”
Elaborating more on the Director’s Cut, Snyder admitted his predilection for such versions. “The Director’s Cut is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career. I don’t know how I got into this Director’s Cut thing, but what I will say about it is that, for me, these have always been something I had to fight for in the past and nobody wanted it,” he said.
Written by Kurt Johnstad, Shay Hatten and Snyder, Rebel Moon features an ensemble cast of Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, Jena Malone, Fra Fee, Ed Skrein and Anthony Hopkins.
Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire is scheduled to be released on December 22 on Netflix, while the follow-up, Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver, is set for release on April 19, 2024.
