Actor Hugh Jackman, who plays mutant Wolverine in X-Men and Wolverine films, opened up about the toll that the role has taken on his voice to BBC Radio 4’s Front Row programme.

“My voice teacher in drama school would’ve been horrified by some of the things I did (in Wolverine). I’ve done some damage to my voice, through playing Wolverine,” the Les Misérables actor said.

The Academy Award-nominated actor is also known for his singing prowess in musicals and stage shows. “My falsetto is not as strong as it used to be and that I directly put down to some of the growling and yelling,” he said.

Jackman played singing and dancing parts in films like The Greatest Showman and Les Misérables alongside several Broadway plays like Oklahoma!, A Steady Rain and The Music Man.

The Australian actor also said he was working on improving his voice for future projects. “We learned the technique (in school) of how to shout and how to yell without ruining your voice. But while playing Wolverine I did some screaming and yelling that did damage my voice.”

“I work with a singing teacher, and I make sure that I try not to hurt myself. And I really put a lot of effort into both physical movement, and my vocal preparation for every role,” he added.

Despite all the damage, Jackman is returning as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, which is scheduled to hit the theatres on November 8, 2024. He will join the titular character played by Ryan Reynolds in the film. The duo first teamed as Wolverine and Deadpool in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
