Siblings Alex (Selena Gomez) and Justin Russo (David Henrie) are back to the wizarding world, this time to mentor wizard-in-training Billie, played by Janice LeAnn Brown, in the trailer of Disney series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
Disney Channel dropped the trailer of the much-anticipated sequel to Wizards of Waverly Place on Youtube on Tuesday, bringing forth a tide of nostalgia and magic with Gomez and Henrie’s characters. The one-minute-10-second-long trailer kicks off with Billie stepping into Justin’s house through a magical mirror and asking his son if it’s the Russo residence. Shortly after, Gomez introduces the young wizard to Justin, who has chosen a normal life with his wife and two sons.
Billie’s energetic personality is reminiscent of Gomez’s Alex from her teenage years. “Billie is a powerful wizard, but she’s rebellious and stubborn,” Alex tells Justin before revealing that the fate of the world now rests in the hands of the young wizard.
Throughout the trailer, Justin guides Billie in controlling her magical powers, saying mistakes are a part of growing up. “In our family, you don’t get kicked out for making a mistake,” he tells Billie.
Created by Todd J. Greenwald, Wizards of Waverly Place aired on Disney Channel for four seasons from October 2007 to January 2012. The series follows the lives of three wizard siblings — Alex, Justin and Max Russo (played by Jake T. Austin) — who live in an apartment on Waverly Place in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.
While the first and second seasons focussed on the siblings navigating challenges in their everyday world, the third and fourth seasons delved into a family competition. The final season shows Alex winning the competition and Justin assuming the position of headmaster at WizTech, a boarding school for aspiring young wizards. Max became the manager of the family's sandwich shop, successfully attracting investments from the wizarding community.
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will pick up from this point, as the now-grown-up Justin is faced with a challenge that requires him to make a crucial decision.
Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas serve as writers and executive producers along with executive producers Gary Marsh, Jonas Agin, Gomez and Henrie. Andy Fickman directed and executive-produced the pilot and will direct multiple episodes.
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is slated to hit Disney Channel on October 29 and Disney+ on October 30.
