Srijit Mukherji is all set to adapt Bratya Basu’s acclaimed play Winkle Twinkle for the big screen, production banner Friends Communication announced on Monday, sharing the film’s first-look poster.
The poster of Winkle Twinkle features a broken statue of Lenin with the two lead actors sitting in front of it. The faces of the actors have not been disclosed.
Srijit’s film follows a growing trend in recent Bengali cinema to adapt stage productions for the big screen. In 2022, actor Anirban Bhattacharya received kudos for his film adaptation of Badal Sircar’s stage production Ballabhpurer Roopkotha, also marking his debut as a film director. Srijit himself had previously adapted Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar as Zulfiqar. Earlier this year, actor Arna Mukhopadhyay forayed into film direction with an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello, titled Atthoi.
Winkle Twinkle, the play which was directed on stage by Debesh Chattopadhyay, revolves around the clash between a father and a son in the world of politics. Sabyasachi Sen, a political prisoner who disappeared without a trace in 1976, returns in 2002 to find a world vastly different from what he had left behind. The play explores the ideological conflict between the father, a revolutionary, and his son Indra, who is now a supporter of a political party with completely opposing views. This father-son dynamic, set against a turbulent political backdrop, forms the crux of the story.
Ritwick Chakraborty and Parambrata Chattopadhyay are reportedly slated to play the leading roles in Winkle Twinkle. Ritwick might step into the shoes of Sabyasachi, a role previously portrayed by Debshankar Halder on stage. Parambrata is expected to play Indra, which was played by Rajatava Dutta on stage.
