“Bet it stinks of curry” — American-British influencer Andrew Tate recently drew flak for his alleged comment on Indian singer-songwriter Diljit Dosanjh after the latter flung his jacket to a fan at one of his Dil-Luminati shows abroad. Diljit’s jacket perhaps smells of success, with hordes of people queuing up to witness the magic he weaves on stage. But if curry is what you crave, he won’t disappoint you either.
You may know Diljit Dosanjh as the Punjabi popstar who has recently made millions flock to his concerts across the US, the UK, Australia and Europe apart from India, selling out tickets in minutes even on foreign land.
But what does Diljit do when he is not performing in packed arenas? He cooks up a storm in the kitchen. And going by his Instagram videos, Diljit, the cook, is as entertaining as the singer.
The Amar Singh Chamkila star will ladle out Chicken Curry or Shaahi Paneer, topping them with dollops of desi ghee and spicy Indian tadka, making you go ‘Punjabi aa gaye oye’! He has also served up a unique fusion of the South Indian dosa with the North Indian chicken curry, the sight of which might make you salivate. Add to that his Punjabi voiceover, which makes every cooking video of his a treat to watch.
Diljit’s omelette-making competition with Canadian actress-director Neeru Bajwa has a dedicated fanbase on social media. The singer looks like a pro in the kitchen, unflappable and going with desi ways of cooking that he likes best, often dropping one-liners that will crack you up.
And his Methi Chicken video has close to 30k likes and over 556k views on his YouTube channel. He has also impressed netizens with his Coconut Chicken, Aloo Shimla Mirch and Punjabi Paneer Chilli.
Diljit’s time in the kitchen is also the time for him to dance, crack jokes and win over the internet with his simplicity. In one of the videos, he is in a black oversized T-shirt printed with his photo and he breaks into bhangra while cooking.
The cooking station is also from where he has begun to make his concert announcements. You can catch him making the Punjabi dessert Khas Khas Halwa while announcing the beginning of ticket sales for his Dil-Luminati concerts in North America.
Diljit reportedly took to cooking during the Covid lockdown in 2020. He has a fan-made YouTube page, Diljit Kitchen, dedicated to his culinary experiments. The channel features a compilation of his cookery videos.
The Hass Hass singer is currently in the final leg of his Dil-Luminati India tour, with a performance scheduled in Mumbai on December 19. The tour will conclude on December 29 with a grand finale in Guwahati.
