Warner Bros. Entertainment on Wednesday dropped the trailer of Watchmen Chapter I, an animated film adapted from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel published by DC comics in the 1980s.

The two-minute-14-second-long trailer introduces viewers to the world of Watchmen, where the once-celebrated superheroes have been banned on the pretext of vigilantism. It begins by showing the murder of The Comedian, a government-sponsored superhero, which draws the attention of Rorschach, a ruthless vigilante. Rorschach’s investigation involves his retired colleagues — Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias — as they try to come to terms with their pasts while trying to save a world from destruction.

Watchmen Chapter I is produced and directed by Brandon Vietti from an adaptation by J. Michael Straczynski. Sam Register, Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin have served as the executive producers.

While Titus Welliver is set to lend his voice to Rorschach, Rick D. Wasserman will voice The Comedian. Other voice cast members include Matthew Rhys (Nite Owl), Katee Sackhoff (Silk Spectre), Troy Baker (Ozymandias) and Michael Cerveris (Dr. Manhattan).

“In an alternate world, the murder of a government sponsored superhero draws his outlawed colleagues out of retirement, into a mystery that threatens their lives and the world itself. Own Watchmen Chapter 1 on Digital 8/13,” reads the official synopsis of the upcoming film.

Watchmen has been adapted several times in the past. Zack Snyder made a live-action film based on the graphic novel, while Damon Lindelof made a television series as well as an animated motion comic in 2008. An animated short film titled Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter came out in 2009, which was praised for its dark tone and how it complements the main Watchmen narrative.

Watchmen Chapter I will be available to stream on digital platforms on August 13.
