Tom Cruise underwent special training for shooting underwater sequences for his upcoming movie Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, show behind-the-scenes photos and video of the Hollywood star shared by the makers on social media.
The footage offers glimpses of Cruise gearing up for an underwater sequence. He dons a scuba suit, exchanges fist bumps and thumbs-ups with the crew, and then enters the water.
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is likely to be Cruise’s final outing as spy Ethan Hunt.
The official Mission: Impossible account on X released the video teasing one of the underwater sequences.
Cruise, too, shared a behind-the-scenes image on X. The photo depicts him underwater, taking a breath from a safety diver’s oxygen tank, with a bluish light illuminating the depths around him. “The training and preparation we put into this film is a culmination of all before it,” Cruise wrote in the caption. “From the depths, to the skies, I can’t wait to share more with you.”
The recently released trailer for The Final Reckoning hints that the underwater sequences will be pivotal to the plot. Hunt must dive to the bottom of the Bering Sea to access the Sevastopol submarine, which holds the key to defeating the AI antagonist known as The Entity.
This isn’t the first time the Mission: Impossible franchise has plunged into underwater stunts. The 2015 entry, Rogue Nation, featured a memorable sequence in which Hunt infiltrates a secure underwater facility, holding his breath for a record-breaking six-and-a-half minutes. Cruise held the world record for underwater filming until Kate Winslet surpassed it in 2022 while filming Avatar: The Way of Water.
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is set to release in theatres on May 23, 2025.
