The year 2020 was the second hottest year recorded in history despite the COVID-19 pandemic leading to a temporary reduction in carbon emissions. Rapidly melting glaciers coupled with hurricanes, wildfires, super-cyclones and unprecedented humidity in several parts of the world continue to add to our woes, with environmentalists pleading for prompt action before it is too late.

A lack of awareness of the impending threats of climatic change could be at the root of the problem going from bad to worse. Here are some documentaries that can help you understand the situation and do your bit to make a change.

Before the flood

Produced by Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio in association with National Geographic, this documentary explores the dangers of climate change and its possible solutions. Directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Fisher Stevens, this 90-minute documentary examines the true nature of the imminent threat faced by the planet through extensive interviews with climate activists, leading scientists and world leaders.

DiCaprio is also the host and narrator of this documentary which focuses on the various phenomena across the globe as a result of climate change. Before the Flood also raises awareness among people who may not be well-versed in the subject.

Ice on fire

Another documentary produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio takes a pragmatic approach to finding solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. Directed by Leila Conners, this 2019 documentary focuses on scientific innovation and guides us through new technologies to combat the environmental effects of climate change.

The HBO documentary is filled with interviews of several innovators and scientists who are working tirelessly to come up with sustainable solutions that can save our planet from extinction. Ice on fire is an excellent starting point for envisioning a sustainable future.

Mission Blue

Directed by acclaimed documentary filmmakers Robert Nixon and Fisher Stevens, this 2014 documentary focuses on Sylvia Earle’s life and work as an oceanographer, marine biologist and environmentalist. The title of the documentary is inspired by a non-profit organisation that Earle created to protect the ocean from threats such as climate change.

The documentary follows Earle’s almost 60-year-long journey to understand how important the ocean is for this planet and why we should protect it. The documentary also features prominent filmmakers James Cameron and Mike deGruy. It is a must-watch for all ocean lovers.

Fire in Paradise

This 2019 Netflix documentary, directed by Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper, narrates the plight of locals who survived the 2018 Camp Fire in Butte County, California, which killed 85 people and destroyed property worth $16.5 billion.

Interviews with volunteer firefighters, 911 fire dispatch operators, and civilians who were besieged by walls of flame on all sides are featured in the 40-minute documentary. News video and cellphone footage are used in Fire in Paradise to highlight how swiftly the fires spread, consuming homes, businesses and roadways.

Paris to Pittsburgh

Directed by Sidney Beaumont and Michael Bonfiglio, this 2018 National Geographic documentary chronicles Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement in 2017 and the Mayor of Pittsburgh’s decision to stay in. The film depicts what is at risk for communities across the US, as well as the inspiring ways in which Americans are responding.

The film also analyses the city of Pittsburgh’s efforts to minimise carbon emissions and the adjustments it has made in terms of energy efficiency. Narrated by Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the documentary features interviews with climate scientists, geologists, legislators and local pioneers to find out what those communities are doing to achieve this.
