Comedian Vir Das, set to become the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards, has called on emerging Indian designers to make his outfit for the event.
In a recent Instagram post, Vir emphasised that he wants something “Indian” and is steering clear of high-profile designers, opting instead to promote a new talent in fashion.
“I’m going to wear something Indian from home,” he wrote. “I’m also not going to wear a fancy designer. They have enough cash and clients. So we’re gonna launch someone new,” he wrote on Instagram.
The 2024 International Emmy Awards will take place on November 25 in New York City.
Stressing the significance of the occasion, Vir made it clear that the outfit must be formal, though not a traditional tuxedo. “This is super duper ultra formal wear at a very high level for a very large audience. You have to make me look good in formal wear… It HAS TO BE INDIAN OR INDO-WESTERN FUSION. I do not need a tuxedo,” he noted.
Vir also assured participants that they would be compensated for their work, along with receiving due credit for their designs. His team will be working closely with the chosen designer to ensure the vision is perfectly realised.
Vir, who was previously nominated for an Emmy in 2021 for his special Vir Das: For India, won the award in 2023 for his Netflix special Landing. His body of work spans across multiple platforms, including ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier, Netflix’s Hasmukh, and Amazon's Jestination Unknown.
