Actor Vikrant Massey attended a special screening of his latest film The Sabarmati Report alongside prime minister Narendra Modi on December 2, hours after making headlines with his retirement announcement on social media.
While Vikrant trended across social media platforms, with fans struggling to decode the move, the 37-year-old showed up at the Balayogi Auditorium in New Delhi in an all-black ensemble and a heavy beard.
Even though this was his first public appearance since announcing his decision to quit films, Vikrant reportedly dodged questions about his retirement from acting.
Sharing pictures from the screening on social media, Vikrant wrote, “A day to remember for the rest of my life. Eternally grateful to the Hon. Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji for sparing the time to watch our movie. Your words of appreciation shall never be forgotten.”
The photos show Modi, home minister Amit Shah and other BJP leaders watching the film along with the cast members. The Sabarmati Report features Vikrant Massey as Shraban Kumar, a fearless journalist on a warpath against the system to unravel the truth about the 2002 Godhra train-burning incident. Raashii Khanna and Ridhi Dogra also star alongside Vikrant. Producer Ektaa Kapoor of Balaji Motion Pictures also attended the film’s screening.
Helmed by Dheeraj Sarna, The Sabarmati Report revolves around the on-field media coverage following the burning of Sabarmati Express in Gujarat’s Godhra on the morning of February 27, 2002. The incident reportedly led to the death of 59 passengers.
Released theatrically on November 15, the film has raked in around Rs 35.56 crore worldwide.
In a social media note shared on Monday, Vikrant attributed his decision to retire from acting to the need to “recalibrate and go back home”. Thanking his fans for their immense support over the years, Vikrant hinted that his two final films will be released next year.
“So coming 2025, we will meet each other for one last time. Until time deems right. Last 2 movies and many years of memories. Thank you again. For everything and everything in between. Forever indebted,” Vikrant wrote.
As per media reports, Vikrant’s last two films would be Yaar Jigri and Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan.
