Filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane’s Andolan Films has partnered with Applause Entertainment for two new projects co-produced by Sameer Nair under their banners — a docu-series on the Emergency and another that centres around Delhi’s Tihar jail.
On Thursday, Applause Entertainment confirmed the news by sharing an image of Sameer Nair and Vikramaditya Motwane on Instagram. “Two gripping tales, one powerful collaboration. Let the storytelling begin! Applause Entertainment & Andolan Films are all set to bring you two compelling stories,” reads the caption.
The first show titled Indi(r)a’s Emergency is a three-part docu-series on one of the starkest chapters in India’s post-Independence history. Narrated by lyricist Swanand Kirkire, the series is pegged as a contemporary historical exploration and will use a combination of archival footage and animation.
The second is a drama series adapted from Sunil Gupta and Sunetra Choudhury’s book Black Warrant – Confessions of a Tihar Jailer. It will offer a glimpse into the mystery and enigma surrounding Tihar jail, India’s largest and most infamous prison. Reportedly, this gritty drama will be told through the eyes of a young jailer.
Motwane is known for directing films like Udaan (2010), Lootera (2013) and Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018). He has also served as the showrunner of Netflix India’s first Indian original series Sacred Games and Prime Video’s period drama Jubilee.
Applause Entertainment has produced shows like Disney+Hotstar’s Criminal Justice, Hostages and City of Dreams, Sony Liv’s acclaimed crime dramas Scam 1992 and Tanaav.
